Acura TL 6MT clunky shifting - FIXED!!!
Acura TL 6MT clunky shifting - FIXED!!!
2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6MT
I bought the car in September of 14 and I always felt that the shifting just sucked major @$$...
Finally I noticed I was getting close to my 6yr 70K mile powertrain warranty and took it in.
Got a call hours later from the SA stating that they have found the issue, and it'll be $3,500... No fkn way... SA said it was checked out and they assured him it needed a clutch, entire flywheel assembly, and throw out bearing. I was pissed. My car has 67K miles on it and there is just no way.
So I ask, so that's covered under powertrain warranty right? NOPE, it's a "wear item". Ok, I get that, but come on. That's crazy.
At that point I get my prop shaft fixed under warranty and ask for a second opinion. SA takes my car to the master tech after I print off the TSB for the clutch master cylinder, and he confirms that it's bad. He stated that the clutch master cylinder is bad, but I'll need my clutch and everything changed in about 20K (Whatev).
So the SA writes up the quote and says "Well, that'll be $400. That's a lot better that $3,500 right?". No, that's Ktuner money dude... So I told him I'd think about it.
Shortly after we hung up, I googled the Acura Care service number and spoke to some great people. First person took down all my information
, the TSB number, and assured me that the escalation person would call me within a few hours. They did call. Man, I was just blow away from the level of concern and professionalism from the woman. She was just great. She assured me she would investigate my issue and call the dealership to confirm and I would receive a call in 24ish hours.
She called back in less than 24 with "Good News". Acura offered to pay for $260 of the $400 which left me with $140 bill. After speaking with the Service Manager face to face, I said go for it
Now that it's done, it shifts like a dream. Gone are the days of turning off the A/C when accelerating just so my tranny doesn't feel like it's going to grenade. Gone are the days having to be so exactly so when matching the RPM just trying to speed up from a stop sign.
My clutch shifts and feels like a heavy civic si clutch now. Crisp and clean. And no more high engagement point. It engages about an inch off the carpet instead of more than 3/4 the way let out.
If anyone has weird clunky shifting, it's a lot cheaper than $3,500 ! Feel free to ask any other questions I may have forgotten to talk about with relation to this topic.
Thanks!!!

Wow, what you mentioned is every problem I think I have had (and for a long time, at that!). I am going to seriously consider replacing my master cylinder when I have my timing belt service completed. I am so disappointed in my clutch engagement and just thought it was the way it had to be in my car. I had to get my clutch replaced at 70,000 miles and I replaced it with and aftermarket SPEC Stage 2+ because I felt that the OEM clutch was too weak (after all, it wore out twice as fast as my other factory clutches in other cars).
There was a TSB relating to the issue of hearing a "squeak" whenever you depressed the clutch and the only solution was to replace the clutch master cylinder. Unfortunately this TSB came out after I was 10,000 miles over the end of my warranty. My local Acura dealership told me that Acura wouldn't pay for it and they wouldn't either. This sucks because I made note of this issue when my car was still in warranty.
But thanks for letting us know how yours turned out! This gives me hope for mine yet!
