6MT Syncro issues?

I should preface this with that I don't "beat" on the car on a regular basis. But from time to time as roads/traffic allow I'll quickly move through the gears to 50 or 60 depending where I am, I don't know if it's just me, or what, but under load, this car is a major PITA to get into gear right, I really find myself having to slow shifts down for the synchros to catch up and move into gear properly. On a day to day basis I drive the car like a car and typically have the kids with me, every downshift is rev matched.

My previous cars, predominately Subaru's, which I've autoX'd and did some light tracking with never had the mis-shift issues I've had with this car.

Maybe it's just the cable actuation not being as direct, but something just doesn't feel right when going through the gears, I've read up on the 3rd gear issues which is where I've also had the most issues, but it happened to me today in 2nd, which was new and unexpected, I happened to be going around a soft bend when it happened, so maybe it's just a torque issue on a FWD biased car? Anyone else have anything like that?

GM syncromesh modified friction.

/thread.

Most hondas have this gear problem.
dating back to Civic Si's and s2k's.
the 3rd gen TL has this problem as well.

I switched my tranny fluid to GM syncromesh and it has cured the grinding/pop out

Sad to hear that the 3rd gear syncro issue is still occurring on the 2012 models.

I've had this examined multiple times at the dealership. Stealership could not duplicate the problem, and its driver's error, of course.

I've also had the occasional weird feeling shifting from 1st-2nd. Feels like a "cable grind screech" as I shift from 1st and 2nd, and I definitely feel and hear it from the shifter (not the engine)... likely driver's error, of course.

I own 2012 TL SH-AWD 6MT for a year now and in that time I experienced several of "cable grind screech" as I shift from 1st to 2nd. To greatly reduce chance that from ever happening again I tend to go from 1 to 3 skipping 2 altogether most of the time when I drive.

A couple of times it happened also when I put the car in reverse and the noise was scary and it wasn't moving backward so I immediately through it into neutral then try again. I have been driving manual for a good 15 years now.

I beat the crap out of my car, never had any issues. My 07 type s did, tried GM SYNCHROMESH for a temp cure, when I had the trans taken apart, that fluid destroyed all my synchros/seals. What it does is swell up everything and eventually deteriorates the material on the synchro. I never recommend anyone to use it ever since, there's no such thing as liquid mechanic, if there's an issue, the only way to fix it is to find the cause and replace it.

I had a 2010 TL SH-awd and for 8K miles it was tough to shift into 2nd. Mentioned it to the dealer and wanted them to look at it at the first checkup but then it went away.
Just bought a new 2012 and this one feels good from the get go.
I had a 2007 TSX which the change in transmission fluid helped stop the third gear pop-out issue.
Sweet gearboxes but not infallible.

Mine's gotten a bit better with the warmer weather, haven't had the issue since I posted this actually. She's garage kept, so I don't know.

While I'd rather have a lever actuated gear lever then cable, this is about as good as I'd expect from any cable driven transmission.

My 2012 feels superb, never had any issues in any gear. Shifts are smooth and precise. Love this Manny Tranny!

My s2000 was stubborn when cold (garage kept). Redline fluid made the tranny a bit noisier, but also seemed to do better with the cold.

I am having the same 2nd to 3rd issues. I took it to the dealer and of course in the short time that they drove it, they could not replicate the issue. Mine seems to become more prominent once the car is warmed up, about after 10 miles of driving then it happens. I can feel the first "step" (basically hitting the synchros) then the second step is slow and I have to keep pressure on the stick until it seats in the gear and then come off of the clutch. Very annoying.

^^^ Try to change out the tranny oil, and go with the GM synchromesh fluid. I think now it is renamed AC Delco synchromesh fluid. It will help with the issue!

Welcome to Acurazine!

This, trust me I did it and it cured all of my problems. I wish my S4 would shift as smoothly as my TL did after I switched to the GM synchromesh

I had the same issue: 2nd-3rd, 4th-3rd, and even neutral-3rd gear pop out. I didn't want to try the GM synrcho mesh fluid b/c of fear the fluid would totally mess up the transmission.

Nevertheless I complained about it to the dealership 5 times, them not being able to duplicate the problem 4 times. The 5th time before I scheduled an appt I filed a complaint with Acura corp; they couldn't duplicate the problem during the test drive, but agreed to keep the car over the weekend. But this time they agreed there was a problem. The dealership replaced the 3rd gear set and also replaced the clutch assembly (under warranty).

Since the repair my TL shifts very smoothly and crisply now, I don't recall the shifter shifting this smoothly before, even when it was new. So my suspicion was that the transmission/clutch was defective to begin with, IMHO. I haven't had the 3rd gear pop out since the repair. I would suggest you be persistent with your dealership, and try filing a complaint with Acura client relations.

My MT sometimes seems a little bit balky, but not too bad. The delayed action clutch is something I am still not used to, even after 8 months.

Glad to hear it worked out for you docboy... I haven't had any issues with the tranny, but the slight oil consumption is starting to get on my nerves.... thank God for the extended warranty!

Never had any gears pop out on my yet but I will be monitoring it now even though I just got her. Only thing thing I noticed was sometimes when the clutch is not fully in gear I would hear a grinding noise but that's just driver error.

Wow.. So another TL manual that had the tranny rebuilt.. Glad I'm not alone on this one! Mine wouldn't even go into 1st anymore it was that bad. It would grind into 2nd often, and occasionally into 3rd. Never popped out of 3rd though like the old TL's.

Acura replaced the 1-2, and 3-4 synchro sets, and all shift forks. Same clutch. Smooth as butter since, was never like that since it was brand new!

Anyone experience a dull grinding sound/feeling when shifting into 2nd from 1st (but not from 3rd to 2nd). It's usually worst when cold. Not the same type of grind when shifting without clutch. I suspect the 2nd gear synchro is shot. Bought the car used at 43K and have experienced it since day one (currently at 49K)

Anyone complaining about this issue should just change to GM Synchromesh. And then after a few weeks you can come back here and tell the people complaining about the same issue to change to GM synchromesh. And so on, and so on, and so on

I had notchiness, 3rd popping out, and a general negative experience with my 6mt. Then I changed to the GM Synchromesh, and all those issues were gone. I love shifting now. Just change the tranny fluid, there have been people running with 100K+ miles on it.
