2012 TPMS Issue

My 2012 SH-AWD Advance is about 1 month old here in Ontario, Canada and I have noticed that the TPMS measurements have been very sporadic but not giving off a warning. All 4 tires will vary between 195 and 245 kpa (about 28 to 34 psi) and still say everything is fine.

Has anyone else had this issue? The temperature doesn't have a huge impact here as it is more a large variance between different tires at any given time.

Do you think the TPMS are faulty or is this normal?

how can you say temp doesnt have a huge impact there...you live in canada...if it gets cold, your tire pressures are going to drop...alot...if you park in a garage and it gets even colder in there, then warms up outside later in the day, you could see a 10 pound drop in pressure...

I just got into the office and all the way here my fronts were 224 and 222 and rears 210 and 211

I know that that change in temp will impact the tire pressure however I wanted to get an idea as to when the TPMS are supposed to set off a warning as my tires have been as low as 194 kpa

If I'm not mistaken (and I may be) I don't believe the TPMS goes off unless the pressure is 25% below recommended levels (as per the manual)? Someone please correct me if this is wrong.

I myself just got the 2012 SH-AWD Advance and didnt notice any problems yet regarding the TPMS. I believe the manual states that if the pressure goes under a certain percentage the indicator by the tire in question will come on. Our model TL has 19 inch wheels therefore the tire ratio is thin. I live in the northeast and we get cold winters as well and with cold weather the pressure will drop. Check and fill your tires every week. If that get too annoying try and get your tires filled with nitrogen. They lose less pressure in the cold.

Thanks for the feedback all. I will review the manual on the 25% and consider filling the tires with Nitrogen

i wouldnt waist my time with the nitrogen....my wifes car came with nitrogen, and the pressure still bounces around....and after a while, you will need to put some air in, and nitrogen isnt that easy to come by, atleast not in my garage anyway....i would just stick with air, and adjust accordingly....

I bought a small air inflator for $30 from Home Depot and check air pressure every month for all the cars in my house.
My tires do come with Nitrogen from dealer. I can refill for free but it's not worth the trip driving to dealer. Even with nitrogen they still lose around 2 psi a month.
If you can find nitrogen for free, then do it. Otherwise just invest in a small compressor.

Bailey24...Being Canadian too, I had alot of tire pressure variation with my regular inflated tires. As other have said, Nitrogen is not immune to that problem but the swing is less noticeable and for me, worth the investment. All my tires read the exact same pressure in KPa once they warm up (maybe 1KPha different) now when cold, they vary a bit more but as I drive, they always warm up to the same pressure. I have a place here that will top it up for free so its worth it in my opinion.

Im in TO. Pressure drop is normal since it's cooling off. Mine have dropped about 20-30kpa in the past few wks from the drop in temp. they go up about 10kpa once they heat up. BUT i still need to top them off with some air.

Make sure that when ur filling the tires, they're all generally around the same temperature, and make sure they're cold. Don't fill up a tire that's hot because it'll obviously give a higher pressure reading.

btw, any other canadian on here that's annoyed they're using kpa and you cant switch to psi???? i know i am! haha

The 25% drop in pressure is correct per my understanding as well.

I've recently checked all my tires, and i did fill up my tires when they were cold. I made sure that while filling them up, i checked them with a Tire Guage, and also checked to make sure the MID was showing the correct rating of 220kpa, (or close to it)

I notice that with the recent temp drop, when i start the car up in the morning it ranges between 205kpa - 212kpa. By the time i get to work, they are reading between 220-228kpa. So i guess my tires are right on, they will never keep a perfect temprature.

^^ ur brakes heat up the rims quite a bit... which in turn increases the pressure. unless ur tires are filled with nitrogen, it's bound to happen.

heck.. even with nitrogen filled tires.. there's bound to be presence of some other gases.

also remember moisture in the tires can affect this reading as well!

yeah.. kpa is pretty useless... i have to convert it to psi before i know what it is anyways....

Agree. I wish display units can be individually configurable. I want the tire pressure to be displayed as PSI; but the vehicle speed remains as kph, and distance in meters.

Forget about Nitrogen that not yield any measurable result.

This is what happened after installing aftermarket air valve caps. They got seized and when being removed broke tpms! The worst purchase decision ever! They are made by TVG

I agree 100%, with all the high tech in this car the two measurement scales should not be a problem

Your tire installer may have damaged your sensor.

I go to Petro-Canada and use their free air pump machines. I fill up to exactly 34psi in cold temperature. After a good drive it can fluctuate from 220kpa to 240kpa or even higher. It's not a huge deal for me. They all seem to fluctuate at the exact same time so it's even all around.
