2012 Tl FWD cold start hesitation and stumble
Hi, Guys
Because of no reply in problem and fix section. So I move it to here.
Had my Tl starting perfectly in the cold morning even in NH coldest morning. There days which are warm. Noticed some hesitation and Stumble at first start after overnight or two days not driving. I do not if it is hesitating. But it sounds not at right rhythm as before. for instance, normally, 3 times cranking then start right away. now it cranks 3 times but starts a little bit ahead or deferred. it is hard to explain. it starts not smooth or fluent since these days.
2012 fwd TL, 29000 miles on it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Probably battery.
I had mine replaced under warranty at 3 years old. It failed the test.
Mine was slow start on certain days too.

wow i noticed mine happening the past couple days. and look someone posted here good to know it could be the battery.

I do not think it is battery. because it only happens after hours stop. and it does not sound like weak to fire up. it sounds like fire up ahead than normal pace.
warm start it is very smooth as normal.

My symptoms is when I have the car sit overnight; the next morning when I start up the car it would start but not as quickly. A little bit hesitant
I'm in the office for about 9 hours during the day and it would start up normal.
Probably nothing major cause I just did my 60k mi maintenance and I had the dealership perform their "free" 18 point inspection and said the battery is fine.

this issue happened to mine just these days. I am thinking if the temperature right now in NH is weird so that temperature sensor could not capture the right data in the not cold not warm morning~~~.
However, when you said hesitant, does it mean having extra cranking? or your engine is not firing up at right point(it does not know to start or not to start at the point which is supposed to start?) or stumble to start?
My concern is a little bit on sensor. coil? plugs? carbon?
had hard time on local dealer who always could not replicate issue even I recorded on my cell for passenger window switch issue. they have to see it in person then they are doing the work. it is hard to talk to dealer. and tired to talk to dealer~~~.

Had a similar issue with my TL. Went a few days of very rough cold starts in the morning and ran fine when it was warmed up. Topped off the tank with new premium from a reputable gas station and the issue went away completely.

Hard to tell from your descriptions how long this has been happening, but if its only been a few days then don't rule out a fuel issue.

Please check the video. But this record is not that obvious than once I noticed. however it should be able to be identified.

Hi, Thank you very much for uploading your video record. I appreciate it.
I guess this video was recorded before you refueled with better gas?
But I think the symptom is exactly same as mine. yesterday I refueled the car when the tank was almost empty (I kept driving for 25 miles when fuel alarm light came up). I will keep my eyes on it to see if it gets better.
btw, how do you think my video record? do you think it is pretty much same issue as your?
Thanks again.

Not sure if it is the fuel. Because I always fill up with Shell V Power or Mobil 93
Car is almost empty and will fill up and report back

Did you check out with dealer or some other garage?
From you video record, you have mod on exhaust? sounds good

Didn't check with the dealership or garage yet.
Nope no mods, all stock. That was one of the reason why my gf got a 2014 TL as well is because the sound of the start up sounds good haha.
I have a 2012 TL SHAWD the 3.7 so maybe it might sound different...than the 3.5?

Your gf chose right thing. Imagine two TL parking on driveway. It should be interesting.
Do Your SHawd TLs have some common issues like oil consumption, propeller noise and Toque Converter?
If you have any thought or solution on cold start hesitation, please let me know. I think I need to keep my eyes on it.
btw, I quoted extended warranty for my 2012 TL for 5 years/80,000 miles for 1230 dollars from Acura Dealer at MA. thinking if I need it or not

If it is not fuel quality, maybe sensor? like coolant temperature sensor?
How long has this been to your TL?

Only happens over night, if it is the battery at least 10 hours of non usage would cause the symptom again. But I might want to check it.
Its happening for about a month ago.
My gf TL she said happens to her's sometimes too. Not sure if this goes too deep but after some googling, it could be the Idle control valve (ICV)

I can tell that it happened to me since around a month ago also.
as to your gf's also does same thing sometimes, it is common for j35?
j35 is supposed to be very solid~~

Update:
Weather has been significantly warmer here in MA, the morning startup has been fine.
I also changed up engine filter (was a bit dirty) and the car started up a bit better. I guess more to follow when the weather gets a bit cooler.

I checked the battery maybe one month plus ago at Acura dealer when did the state inspection. It was good.
I suspect the coolant temperature sensor or some sensors monitoring the outside temperature.
#31
I have same feeling when the warmer morning, it starts fine. due to it just happened to me recently, and was fine in past NH winter, I suspect coolant temperature sensor? or sensor monitoring outside temperature and giving the ECU data to calculate the amount of fuel injection?

nope, probably gonna have to wait till October or something when the weather is colder.
i had one of those free 18 point inspection done on my car and looks like the battery is fine. How about you?
Maybe I need to change out the spark plugs?

i keep using Mobile gas about 3 full tanks. yesterday morning NH was around 58, then I had lighter symptom. But other than that, during those 3 tank mobile gas, I did not have this happened.
the battery is good by inspection. now, I think the gas is not the factor. temperature is. so I still suspect the sensor.

Did you find anything related? or talk to dealer ever?

Similar problem here with my 2011 SH-AWD, but not when cold. When I really get on it, it chokes between gear shifts. It's so irritating that if there is no fix for it, I'm seriously considering selling my TL after only three months of ownership. For example, I floor it. The RPMs get up to 5500, then drop to 3500 when shifting, car chokes, then starts to pull again but at a slower rate until it reaches over 4000. I'm wondering if the VTEC is kicking in at the higher RPMs, then cutting off when shifting, then turning on again once the RPMs increase again. Anyone else experience this? Would a worn torque converter cause this to happen?
