2010 CBP - Paint Issue
ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE...
I emailed the dealership today that is re-painting my car. I told them I appreciate all they're doing to this point but I feel that I deserve some compensation for being without my car for a month and for purchasing a barely used CPO that will no longer have the factory paint job.
I asked for the front, sides, and rear under body spoilers. I received a response stating consider it done...they will
order them and have them installed before I pick it up. Needless to say I am very impressed with my interaction with this dealership to this point. Granted, my final decision will come when I pick it up and see the finished results, but so far so good.
Also, I did some research and found that it's best to wait 90 days for the paint to cure before installing a clear bra so I requested they hold off on this and I will bring the vehicle back at that time. In addition I asked that they make sure it is not waxed after the work is complete. I found about 90 days should pass before this is do
ne as well.

You truly have an awesome dealer, stay with this dealership for life!
I fully agree man, I lucked out. As someone said earlier, it's even crazier that they made no money on the sale but are ensuring I am happy in the end. They will be getting my business for many years to come.
Well I picked it up this past Friday and I am very happy with the results! The paint looks great, the underbody spoiler kit is amazing, and I'm loving the badgeless look (I requested they leave them off). I will have some pics up soon in the Photo Gallery.
Switching back to the 6MT AWD from the FWD loaner I had is a HUGE difference. It makes me love it that much more!

Hey UCF
This is PC. Went out to the body shop today to take a look at how our TL was progressing. From what I can see, the car will look great. They finishing the wetsanding and still had to was a buff it out. We also have the 6MT and miss driving the car. We should have it by the weekend. I will keep you posted. Thanks

I experienced the same paint problem on my CBP 2010 TL SH-AWD! I bought the car brand-new from a dealer here in Jacksonville, FL in February of 2010. In March of this year, my husband was detailing the car and noticed the exact same thing you pictured above. After going back and forth with the Regional Manager as well as Acura's Corporate offices (neither of which would admit that the paint was defective), I had to file a complaint through the Better Business Bureau in order for American Honda Mediation to step in. Once they were involved, the rep they sent out took one look at the car and said it was a factory paint defect. I was given a brand new loaner (had 10 miles on it) and my car was completely repainted. They had my car for about 7 weeks total, but I am extremely satisfied with the outcome. Hope yours turns out just as well.

Hi UCF - Well, we finally picked up our TL yesterday from the dealership. Took a little longer than estimated (5+ weeks), but it was worth the wait. The car is absolutely gorgeous. I can honestly say that the repaint looks better than the factory finish. The body shop that did our job did an amazing job. Also - thanks to you for setting the precedent on asking for the ground effects kit. I approached my dealer about being compensated as well and they also gave me the three kits for free !! Wasn't sure we would like the look, but once we saw the car, fell in love with it all over again. I also negotiated with the dealer an additional 6 years (not miles) warranty on the paint/body and the shop that did the work warrants his work for the life of the car. Our dealer has been nothing but stellar during this whole ordeal and overall I am very pleased with everything. I hope others that may own a BP TL and have the same paint issue receive as great service as we did. Thanks UFC and to the other folks in this forum for your help and advice.

Since you're so happy with how your dealer has been taking care of you, you may want to consider contacting Acura Client Services and letting them know. I sent a letter ripping the dealer that sold me the vehicle and praising the dealer that has been taking car of me. I know the latter appreciated it.
Enjoy your TL! I sure am
I'll be washing it today for the third time in two weeks, haha.
Thanks for the tip on the Acura Client Services. I will definately contact them and relay our story. I have already posted a letter to our dealers website thanking them for all their help and will also do the same for the body shop that did the paint.
On a side note, the body shop that did our work had quite a few suggestions on how to wash the BP and keep it looking new. He said to never take it to any carwash, never towel dry it (he uses his leaf blower) and he only uses (get this) cloth diapers to wash his car. I hate the thought of getting swirl marks on our new paint and will try these suggestions! Thanks again for all the help!

That's some interesting advice on the washing. I've used a leaf blower before but I have to go over it with a microfiber towel afterward or there will be water spots / streaks. I would NEVER take it to a carwash that's for sure...even the touchfree ones.
Do you know if they waxed it? I've read that some paints should cure for 30-90 days before they are waxed, but my shop hand waxed mine before I took delivery. I'm assuming they know the paint they used and that it was ok to do so. I'll probably re-do it in the next few weeks using a three step process (wash, polish, wax).

Now that you mention it - he also said to use the microfiber towle after blowing to remove spots. Good question about the wax. I will followup with the body shop as there are a few areas that we have found that may need some minor rebuffs. I know the dealer stated we needed to wait 3 -4 months before they will reappley the AutoGuard product we bought from them. Are you familiar with that product? It is applied at the dealer when you purchase the car and is suppose to help protect from UV, Acid rain, bird droppings etc.
We are off to AutoZone to get some new microfiber towels, then to Babies R Us for diapers!! (Have not seen the inside of that store in years!).

I've never heard of AutoGuard, is that similar to a clear bra? Mine came with a one of those that they will be replacing but said they have to wait 30 days.
It's funny you mention Babies R Us. My wife and I spent about 3 hours registering there on Saturday...expecting the first 'little one' in March. That's part of the reason I moved from the 2-door sports car to the 4-door sports car

Hi UCF...you were correct about the wax/buffing. The dealer stated that they want to wait at least 3 -4 months for the paint to cure and then apply the wax/buff and then the autoguard. The clearbra is something different.
Can't believe how shiney the car is without the wax.
Congratulations on the pending arrival of your first child....what an exciting time for you and your wife
We (I) traded in my Honda Odyssey (loved the car) once my kids were old enough and I was not playing taxi anymore. That was the car we traded for the TL. Love the Honda/Acura products. We have owned 8 vehicles/motorcycles in our lifetime. I hope this car lasts!

Well i know this is an old post but I have the same issue. Black, 2010 TL with tech. they are suppose to re-paint mine too. somehow this got past the cert used inspectors and I bought it with 10k miles. anyway, what did they say to you when you asked for compensation? did you go through the dealer or through Acura customer service? any help would be appreciated as I am getting ready to go through the same thing. thanks!

I got very lucky because the dealer that re-painted my car wasn't even the one that I purchased it from. I just emailed them while they had it and told them that, though I was appreciative of what they were doing, I felt I deserved some compensation. I asked for the underbody spoiler kit to be installed at no charge and they replied "consider it done."
I'm sure this isn't a common occurrence but I would suggest you approach them with the same calm attitude. If they don't agree to compensate you get Acura Corp. involved. Your car should NEVER have passed the CPO inspection. That is a specific part of the process too...checking the paint on every panel.
Good luck!
ya, i am also not dealing with the dealership that I bought it! The one I bought it from tried to pass it off like i did something to it. They were rude over the phone about it and basically tried to tell me there was nothing they could do so I called the one that was closer to me and they have been helpful even though its been a week and a half since i have taken it in and they agreed that there was a defect.
well i guess its time to get an attorney. getting the run around from both corp and the dealership i bought it. they both are trying to bully me into thinking i did something wrong and dont want to answer my quesitons about how it got past CPO and how its going to affect the equity of the car. can anyone tell me if their new paint job came from the manufacturer or a local bodyshop?
Just noticed i have the same issue and it covers about 95% of the car. Called Acura and they said there are no known issues with the paint. Im going to take it to a dealer. Did they just respray the car or did they completely remove the existing paint?
They completely removed the old paint...sanded down to the metal. I didn't have the issue on any of the plastics.
J'm asking since I have the same problem.
i had my car repainted several months ago.. still shiny as ever..
but then again.. i am a amateur detailer so i know how to take care of my car. i.e swirls, scratches, etc.
Glad to see Acura is making it right with another customer.
I suggest you do a thorough inspection (inside and out) in the sunlight before taking the vehicle back. Fortunately I had no issues. Also, inquire about what part(s) they will be painting. My dealership left my front and rear bumper alone but there was no issue with paint matching as they had not faded.
Good luck!

few things to consider..
first request a loaner with no mileage limit.. i got a 2013 mdx at the time..this was back in 2012 so you could get a 2014 if possible.
ask acura who is going to be painting your car.. they contract out to shops.. so get the name of the shop and read some yelp reviews.. If you like the shop, make sure you meet with their rep and get a person in contact so you can keep tabs of the progress throughout the process. I stopped by the shop 2 times a week just to let them know that i am on top of my shit and that i mean business so they cant fuck up or i will be back.
also check with acura to see what part they are actually repainting, like Ucf_bronco said they painted the entire car besides front and rear bumper.
Check every crack and crevice of the car once it is done, look at the body lines to see if they are all equally apart and check for missing bolts and tabs. shops are famous for loosing nuts and replacing them with any nut they can find. Make sure all your electrical components work, headlight, ac, windows, etc.
Check under the hood, see if your hood insulation that is attached under the hood is mounted tightly, mine was very loose and they had to replace it with another one due to that the shop ripped it when taking it apart.
Check all the tabs that hold your plastic engine cover down, mine had several missing and was very loose, they replaced the tabs for me.
Make sure there are no paint drips at the ends of the body parts.
Check interior for scratches, rips, etc. Check chrome roof lining to see if they are secure.
Lastly, i am not sure if the members that had the problem got something out of it, but i bitched and made it a issue, they gave me 7 year, 120k warranty.. for free due to this issue.. my warranty expires in 2017 LOL

Thanks for the reply pots. The Acura dealership I am taking it to actually has a body shop and it will be done on site which I find to be acceptable.
I read someone else who bitched about it and got a free body kit. I will try for the warranty though.

And yeah, that was me who got the free body kit. I didn't have to bitch, just let them know I was not happy with getting a CPO Acura and needing a full re-paint (had less than 10k miles at the time). My local dealership (not Acura Corp) is awesome and complied...though they didn't have to.
