I have no clue, so that's why I ask:
what else does this do than lowering the weight by 4.5lbs and looking shiny?

If the diameter is different it might change something, but if not what am I missing here?

I mean I loose 4.5lbs after taking a dump... might be cheaper

EDIT:
FInally found a good explanation for another Pully for a different car, so sorry for the cross reference!
DECREASES ROTATIONAL MASS

The PERRIN Performance Crank Pulley weighs just 1.2 lbs, which is 4-pounds lighter than the stock OEM crank pulley. This reduction in weight from the crank shaft is equal to removing more than 100 lbs of vehicle weight! Throttle response, horsepower and torque are all increased with this easy to install part.

"This reduction in weight from the crank shaft is equal to removing more than 100 lbs of vehicle weight!"

I'm trying to make sense of this...seems like a stretch. What they mean is it frees up power, but I am unsure that it is enough to equate to 100 lbs savings. 100lbs effects acceleration, braking, handling... the pulley only frees up power to the wheels.

"Throttle response, horsepower and torque are all increased with this easy to install part."

This is true though. Yes a smaller diameter helps as well, but the weight is the big bonus.

^^^ glad you found that link....

its rotational mass and because its so close to the engine it frees up a lot of weight....

in the 3G the pulley weight difference (static) is 7.5 lbs and dynamically is 105 some lbs....

This may be a rookie question but...

My car is a CPO, does this mod void that? Or is it a dealership by dealership decision?

While we are at it...is there any other mods to keep away from that could void CPO/factory warranty?

Thaaaaaaanks.

I might make another trip to your garage again, Marcus. I want to get this pulley and the P2R throttle body spacer.

^^^it is a dealership - dealership decision....

I am using the UR crank pulley (same thing) since 60K miles without a problem.....i did my timing belt job at 133K and the dealer didnt say anything about it....so i guess it depends on dealer to dealer....

finally there was some debate where people mentioned about a harmonic balancer, but the 3G/4G (atleast the 3G as far as i know) is internally balanced and doesnt need a harmonic balancer.....

Can someone post an installation-manual, if available?
Seems like an affordable mod (looks more promising than a SRI or CAI).

I did the P2R spacer, gaskets, and intake runners all at the same time. At the time only had the SRI and it felt like it quicked things a bit - but not overwhelming in the least.

man i would jump on this but would like to see someone have it first.. ive heard many horror stories from the TSX side about this messing up the motor..

i remember there is this one thread where this tsx member's car wouldn't start because of this crank pulley but didnt bother to show proof..

anyone have it yet?

NOT this pulley.
the TSXers underdrove and added a 2nd pulley.
thats what messed things up.

with this pulley you'll be safe.
its the same as the third gen.
because it remains factory diameter.

DO NOT UNDERDRIVE.

^^^ that was for the under-drive !!!

this is the stock sized....

the under-drive is smaller in diameter and hence "under driving" your components....i would highly recommend to stay away from that....it will gain you 1-2 ponies more but does risk damaging your engine in the longer run....

^^^

Justn, you will see gains on the dyno....the throttle response will improve and it will free up some of the lost power....the real gains will be felt during driving but dyno will show some improvements....

I thought it was like losing weight....is it not?
105 dynamic loss.
when you drop pounds you dont see this on the dyno.....no?

^^^ yes weight loss makes you quicker but doesnt show up on the dyno other than the pulley....as pulley comes under the drivetrain loss...say you make 260 at the crank but only 230 at the wheels....so when you install the pulley, you still make only 260 at the crank but prolly 235 at the wheels....

am i making sense here....

PS: those were just random numbers i picked....

You will see marignal gains on the dyno if it's being consistent / sensitive enough.

HP = (Torque x RPM) / 5252

This is the formula all dynos and manufacturers use.

Torque is the measure of the rotational power of the engine. By taking 4 pounds off the rotational mass, you're reducing the effort needed to turn the same assembly meaning that power is no longer being parasitically consumed, but instead, to do work.

You gain a pound foot of torque - you gain HP.

Countless people with 3G TLs have and love this pulley. Just because your car is one year newer means very little. The engine in these cars is the same. Your results will be as well. Less power lost to parasitic drag.

I have had a 3 piece underdrive crank/alternator/ps pulley kit on my 1G TSX for more than a year and a half and 30K miles, including one track day and 3 1000+ mile road tips. I have NEVER had an issue.

I explored the issue with the 2G TSXs a bit and could not come up with a substantive reason for their issues. I cannot corroborate it at all.

NOBODY will have an issue with this part on this car, guaranteed. Unless you install it wrong.

There is no real good reason not to underdrive.

This is probably not true. While you won't see 10 hp gains you should see at least 2-3 across the entire rev range.

Are we sure there is an issue here? The fact that the PS is electric really should not make a huge difference in my mind unless there is a technical reason not to.

Actually the difference from a 2005 and 2007 TL-S is a lot. I used the under drive on my 2005 and it made a big difference, on my tl-s .... Nothing... Not even a little. So that's why I'm debating on the 2010. Ill buy it just to see, I was already going to go down that road...

It is a mechanical component. There is no reason why it would make a difference on one car and not the next, even if it is a Type-S. More likely you felt less of a difference because the Type-S engine makes more power. 5 hp on a 200 hp engine is a bigger gain than 5 hp on a 260 hp engine (I know these aren't the right numbers but you get my drift).

I was thinking more so along the lines that the gains were more on the 05 than the 07, due to the stroke and the fact that the 07 was more of a balanced engine vs the 3.2

Engine balance has nothing to do with the power gains I would not think. I honestly would believe the gains would be the same on both engines.

Factory pulley weights have consistently gone down from J32 to J35 to J37 by a pound or so each generation (if I recall properly) - while the gain is there - the amount of the gain per generation is potentially less percentage.
