4th gen starter mods

Hello I am new here, I am looking for what would be the best mods to start with for power on my 2009 tl fwd. I would like to know where to start for a beginner. Not looking for things that I would have to get tuned, or that will put my cel on. Thank you for any and all help.

A j-pipe would be the best place to start.

I don't really know much about the throttle body spacer... check out this thread if you haven't already. It should help a lot.

throttle body spacers don't do jack!
any air tuning is done in the intake manifold, not before it!!!!!
instead of the throttle body spacer, get the intake manifold spacer!!!

Agree with justn. The intake manifold spacer will help a bit with keeping the air a bit cooler due to a non-metal barrier between the intake runners and manifold. I haven't used the TB spacer on my 4G because it did nothing when I used one on my 3G.

Any mods would benefit from a tune. Ktuner makes a very significant difference after bolt-ons are added. However, bolt-on mods are still plenty beneficial without a tune.

Check out this thread for the most effective mods from beginning to end. I agree with pseudo's list and priority order: https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-p...our-4g-854092/

I don't believe he addressed weight though. Lighter weight wheels make a very significant difference. They're "softer" and more fragile however so keep that in mind. And they're not cheap. Removing other heavy items such as the spare tire and going with a lightweight battery are also some options. Weight reduction is significant but there's only so much you can do without compromising the ride quality of the car.

I also have a 4G FWD and I can tell you that there's plenty of improvements to be made. But it's not the best platform in terms of $/performance ratio. I've spent about $4K and I'd estimate I've only added maybe 30hp judging on my butt dyno. Now that I've got it tuned I'd like to get a proper dyno but unfortunately I didn't get one to begin with so it's going to be tough to really gauge the improvement.

Thank you all for the help. I will get it tuned but after all the bolt ons and such. All very good advice.

It seems like most people go with a j-pipe for their first mod since it's easy to do and lets you feel a little extra pep. After that I went with the J37 throttle body and intake manifold plus some ported intake runners. Those mods together with the FWD base tune made the car pretty fun to drive. Just going by feel, the throttle body/manifold/runner combo added a noticeable amount of power in the midrange and helped a bit with throttle response.
