what exactly is this wallpaper good for? I downloaded a few onto my HDD... but they don't really show up anywhere unless the car is in park and you go to "show wallpaper". is that correct?!?!
I thought it would be the start up image at least...

When you turn on the car, it should pop up with a disclaimer that you have to accept in order to see the map or audio screen. If you wait like 10 seconds and don't hit anything, the wallpaper will display. Just an fun thing to do.

As SlyAccord pointed out, it does come on automatically if you don't accept the liability disclaimer.

One other potential "use", though I've never actually tried it, is for sympathy. I have a really nice family photo saved to the system...you know, pretty wife, cute kids, proud dad...that sort of thing. If I get pulled over for something, my intent (if I have the presence of mind) is to immediately turn on the wallpaper. Perhaps the cop would go easy on a family man.

Not sure if it will work. Asuming it might, here's a "Pro Tip"...it doesn't have to be a picture of your family (just make sure there's not a different "dad" in the picture).

So I dont have a photo (clearly) but I uploaded a photo of my A** mooning the camera to my fathers 09 TL, so we later that day hopped in the car and of course 30 seconds into driving my a** comes on his screen mooning him! good father/son time spent laughing for at it. of course he immediately changed it back to what it was before!
