Update worth it?
Update worth it?
i just got an email for the navi update for my 2011 tl. they say if i get it now will only be 99 dollars. is this update worth it if i only drive in the city 95% of the time?
what are advantages and disadvantages for everyone?

Disadvantage: It's $100. Or $150 when it's not on sale.
Advantage: Adds new roads.
That's it, really. Unless you are routinely driving in areas the map doesn't cover, there's no reason to update. It doesn't add features, make the screen work differently, fix problems, or improve gas mileage.

^^^^ WTH........
Westside, if your navigation is 2 years or older, you might consider it, especially at this reduced price of $99. I just bought it and just got it yesterday.

I'm not dropping any cash on an update anytime soon, since the Canadian update is $179, and doesn't appear to go on "sale". But I'd be tempted, notwithstanding I generally know where I am. One of the main things I actually use nav for is sort of a "directory assistance"...if I'm on my way somewhere, I can often call ahead (and sometimes determine that I don't need to go there after all). Although the nav update doesn't add features to the nav system, I have to imagine it updates the businesses and their phone numbers in town. Restaurants in particular come and go...getting updated contact info so I can call from the car has value.

Sorry if others know this already, but it took multiple phone calls to Navteq, and multiple dealers to know this even existed. This customer service rep gave me this web address. He said basically anything on this map:

would be on the update. I live in St. Louis, and my 2012 TL still doesn't have a major highway that was closed in 2008 and reopened in 2010! So I assume my update was 3 years old on a brand new car. Anyway Highway 40/64 runs right through the middle of St. Louis, making navigation to any points of interest useless without it. Looking at this link, I see the highway now, so I'm more comfortable dropping $99 knowing it's there. He said the only problem with the map, is that the map is current, and the disc is from November 2012, but odds are good. Just wanted to pass that on since good information is poor when you ask a dealer or call the place.

BTW the instructions says this takes _5 HOURS WITH THE CAR RUNNING_ to complete.
Unless you plan to take a long trip without access to your nav or radio, this seems like a pretty useless process!
Not worth $100 to waste time and five hours of idling.....

I kind of wondered this too, but you can actually turn the car off at any time and it will pick back up where it left off next time you drive somewhere. I actually just ordered this and installed last week. I was impressed with how easy it was, and it never missed a beat, even turning the car off and on after several trips. You can opt for the 2 hour version or 5 hour version. The longer one allows you to use the navi partly after 40 minutes, along with the HDD/ipod/HFL, while it's running. I opted for the shorter one just to get it done. My phone stayed connected to the HFL but you just can't change the screen to see the phonebook, speed dials, etc.
It is weird that it takes so long to copy data, but not sure what all is going on behind the scenes.
Sorry to revive this slightly dated thread...
I attempted to order the 2013 update for my early production 2012 yesterday and when I tried to enter my database # (10.90) it would not let me input a 2 digit first number. It was limited to one digit (_._ _).
Has anyone had this same difficulty?
