No 2017 Map update yet?

I recently bought a 2010 TL SH-AWD with the tech package. it appears the NAV has never been updated (Still running DB 7.80 SW 1.92). I was going to buy the NAV update disc, but it appears that while most of the other Acura discs are now 2017 version, the Red Disc for the 2009-2010 TL has not been updated yet. Only the 2016 version is available at the Acura NAV update site. Do those historically get updated late? I'd rather wait and get the 2017 version if it is about to be released.

What does Acura generally do if you buy the 2016 version and they release the 2017 version right after, do they upgrade you as courtesy? or SOL?

I just bought a 2013 TL Advance and it hasn't been updated either. I updated my '12 TL (which I'm getting ready to sell) last Spring with the '16 disc. I don't want to spend $149 for the '16 disc when the '17 should be out any day now. I hope it comes out soon. There's a vast improvement in the '16 update in my '12 TL.

What differences did you notice when you updated to 2016?

I live in a smaller city of 50,000 people. Almost all of the neighborhoods hadn't been verified causing the navigation to inform me over and over and over that I was entering an unverified area. Was very annoying to hear that all the time. That was all cured when I updated. Also, when I vacationed this year going to the beach several times, the updated version took me the right way recognizing all of the newer highways and roads I would have taken anyway. The old version didn't know those routes. Maybe it's me but it seems like the graphics were a bit sharper with the update. Lastly, the old version wouldn't recognize my home address. The updated version does. My neighborhood is 10 years old and in my opinion should have been recognized much earlier. I will buy the '17 version when they release it for my '13 TL which hasn't been updated. It's nice to use the, "Go Home", feature and actually have the navigation recognize my home address.

Note on Acura's website posted today that says the 2017 map update for the 4G TLs will be available around 02/20/17.

2017 Map update is officially available as of today, 02/20/17, for $149 + shipping. I want it but think I'll wait a bit to see if they offer the $99 deal like they have every other year.

Yup. I'm doing the same. If by the end of March they haven't put it on sale, then I'll bite the bullet and get it. I'm still running 2010 maps.

For F sakes I hope they update some of the roads in MN and SD, I mean going down a road that has existed for 50 years in one area and not being verified. Hell give me the verifying software I will drive these roads.

I hear you. It's beyond annoying to hear the phrase, "Entering unverified area", over and over. The '16 update fixed that on the '12 I recently sold. For the '13 I have now that needs updating, I'm right back to hearing the phrase again. The main reason I want the '17 update is to shut that voice up.

Would like to know why folks are excited about purchasing nav update for $99. In a world of smartphones with GPS capability, why spend this money? What am i missing here?

Thanks

I use Waze on my phone as my primary Navigation tool when I need door to door directions. It does a much better job of getting me around traffic than the Acura NAV system and has extra perks like telling me if there are cops ahead and other little details. However, when I am not using Waze to give me turn by turn directions, it's nice to have an accurate map up all the time so I can the roads around me. For example, if I am stuck in a long line of cars waiting at a light to turn right, and there is a residential street coming up, I can glance at the map and see if that street will get me around the traffic at the light and out to the road I need to be on. When you drive around a congested urban area, that saves you a ton of time. Also, the Points of Interest feature does a much better job of telling you what restaurants, Gas Stations, etc are coming up on your route, or at the next exit. That is one area where Waze is a little bit lacking.

While I don't plan to pay $99 every year to have the latest and greatest, My 2010 TL (that I just bought in December) has never been updated, so the current map and POI data is now 7 years old and relatively useless. The $99 update will be worth it for me.

If you drive to an area with poor/no cell coverage a smart phone with GPS capability is useless. The in-car Nav is always available.

While I wouldn't get an update every year, my 2013 TL that I bought in October hasn't been updated so I'll get the $99 update.

Does anyone know if the 2017 maps have the same look and feel of the older maps? In my case 2010. I know the screen technology is what it is. But will the 2017 look and feel any different is what I'm asking.

The maps will not look any different, they will just have new roads on them that were not there before, and the "points of interest" (restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, etc will be updated).

Here in South Florida, there are whole towns that have popped up where there was nothing but Everglades before, and little residential communities all over south Dade where there was nothing but crop fields before. also, a bunch of our freeway interchanges have been completely re-done and freeways have been extended. Also, express lanes have been added to many of the freeways with limited entrances and exits which affect navigation routes.

Lets see how many of those changes have been included in the 2017 update.

Personally, I don't want to fidget with my phone while I'm driving. Also, I would much prefer looking at the larger navigation screen in the car versus the smaller phone screen. I like being able to manipulate the zoom feature on the car's unit. I wouldn't begin to use the word, "excited", in describing how I feel about purchasing the navigation update but I have no problem dropping $100 for it once every couple of years. The updated points of interest are nice to have as well. I live in a city of 50,000. The older version navigation doesn't recognize many of the streets I use almost daily. I can't stand hearing my system telling me I'm in an unverified area over and over. It's worth the hundred bucks just to shut her voice up. To each his own though. What's worth a hundred bucks to me isn't worth that to others.

Has anyone run the '17 updates yet? If so, were there any problems or did the installation go smoothly?

I'm in the middle of the background update. So far no issues. Started yesterday, picked up again while driving to work and back home. I think it should be done by the end of the week.

I did mine Saturday as a "full power upgrade". It took the expected two hours (a little more since I wasn't sitting in the car waiting for it to request stuff like "restart" and "insert disc 2").

I didn't want to have the car idling that long, so I parked the car in my backyard, plugged it into a battery charger, and put it in "accessory" mode. I let it do the upgrade while I did other stuff in the backyard.

The Process went smoothly and exactly according to the instruction booklet that came with the discs
1) insert disc 1
2) upgrades application
3) reboots
4) asks for code
5) upgrades maps
6) asks for disc 2
7) continues to upgrade maps
8) reboots
9) upgrades application
10) reboots
11) remove disc 2
12 ) reboots

Just finished my installation this evening. Went exactly like yours. However, I did the update as I drove. I put disc one in yesterday morning and went about my normal routines turning the car off and on numerous times in the process. The installation always restarted itself within seconds of firing up the engine. I no longer hear, "entering unverified area", when turning into my neighborhood. Worth the hundred bucks in my opinion.

Is there anyway to find a list of updated areas? I live in Toronto, not sure if it's worth the 179 CAD price tag for 2012

Glad to hear your installation went smoothly. Quick question. How far along did the status bar go before you were prompted to put in the second disc?

Just to be clear, it's not $179. It'll be $179 + $32.50 (shipping) + $38 (FedEx) = $250ish.

Not far along at all. Like maybe 3 little squares. I would guess approximately 1/15th of the status bar if even that.

Okay cool. Mine went to around 4-5 little squares before it asked for the second disc. I thought the status bar would move at least half way before asking to insert the second disc.

I thought the same thing. It seemed quite disproportionate.

LOL well I guess that's a pass for me, wonder if I could snag it at the dealer and avoid the shipping charges?

Yeah..adding it up was the deal-breaker for me. If it was a good system, I'd consider dropping the cash (though certainly not every year; I'm still on '09), but that price for a weak system...no thanks.

That said, one if the guys here, illistik, has offered to input an address for me in Grande Prairie (which is way north of me); if it comes up, that would satisfy me that the US and Canadian discs are the same, at which point I intend to see if i can buy the US version, and get one of the guys here on A-Zine to ship it through.
