Lossless audio

I have 2012 TL Tech SH-AWD.

I think another thread said CD's are imported at 128K and that this cannot be changed.

If I want CD / higher quality audio than mp3, (save the debate on whether I can tell the difference or not) the best way seems to be a iPod Classic and to use ALAC format (Apple lossless). iPod Classic being a hard drive based device thus would have lots and lots of space since the lossless files take a ton more space than mp3's do.

Who has tried this and how did it work out? Does it sound as good as a CD?

also, is it possible to upgrade the hard drive? I'm not against ripping the radio out of the dash, imaging the existing hard drive to a new larger one, and reinstalling everything. The question is, will the OS see that there's more space. I remember on the Tivo you had to do something in software to let the thing know you now had a bigger drive.

A quick search would have revealed this:

This is what I do, and it works very well for me. Can't offer direct comparison to CD quality as I never listen to CDs any more, but the sound is pretty good. iPod Search option is awesome! And oh, never transferred anything to the internal HD either.

One of the few things Acura really messed up - included such a hard drive and then force to listen at such abysmal rates

This is the first car forum I've belonged to where people are so quick to assume that the person did not search anything. It gets to the point that people feel offended if you ask a question that's been answered somewhere in the abyss of this site. There are a finite amount of topics to talk about with an Acura... if new threads were not posted, the form would close down... considering most people feel that every new question has already been answered. By the way, the search feature sucks... it's sad that you have to use Google to search something on THIS site.

My opinion... (because it's not in another thread) is that Apple lossless sounds great. I don't know if I'd put it up there with DVD-A quality, but it's definitely better than an mp3, regardless of the compression rate. I download most music as flac files and convert them to .wav. This helps keep most of the original integrity of the music.

I will assume that this comment was directed at my response within this thread, wherein I directed the OP to a thread containing the answer...an act which I thought was helpful, but perhaps you have a different view. I would submit the following points:

1. I was not "quick to assume" that the OP had not searched; I was confident of that fact, given that my search turned up the answer the using the first search terms I tried (though I can't recall what they were now);

2. You suggest that the search feature "sucks" and refer to the site as an "abyss", without specifying what brings you to use these terms. If I was to level a criticism at the search feature, it would be that it is hampered by the sheer volume of results arising from a search...a fact which stems from too many duplicate threads, I suspect;

3. Acurazine will not die if the duplicate threads are reduced, and nobody has, to my knowledge, taken the position that "every new question has already been answered". By your measure of success, the Amazon forums, with their "add a letter, take a letter", and "what's your favorite color" threads must be considered a huge triumph. I'm no moderator, but I don't think we need that here.

At present, the OP has 3 posts under his or her belt. That's not a criticism, however one can certainly infer from this that the OP is not completely aware of all the forum's features. Given the ease at which I found the answer to their question, clearly they could benefit from a reminder as to the search functionality (flawed as it apparently is).

But, your thread wasn't even directed at his original question.

Sorry...the thread I linked to, entitled "I-009 DIY: Use a High Capacity External HDD w/ USB" had no bearing on his question "also, is it possible to upgrade the hard drive?".

What am I missing?

Should I have searched harder to answer his question?

All I meant to say was sometimes people post threads that supposedly have your answers... yet the thread may be months old. What if there is new information out there that somebody didn't post? As soon as somebody has a new or exciting idea, they don't necessarily post it immediately. Seeing a new thread may spur the idea to share their thoughts...

I don't see anything wrong with posting a new thread to spark a conversation that may have been answered with outdated information.
