Question iPhone and Voice Recognition Calling - HELP!

I picked up my TL today. My iPhone paired with the car fine. It imported my phonebook fine. But we couldn't get the voice recognition to dial a phone number by the names of the people in the phonebook. We could call with the voice recognition by saying the phone number, or by saying the number of the persons position on the phonebook list. However, it wouldn't call when saying the person's name like "Patty/Home," or "Patty/Cell" unless this information was in "speed dial." Can you make a phone call to any person in your phonebook by their name, or can you make a phone call to a person by name only if they are in speed dial? My salesman indicated that I should be able to call anybody in my phonebook just by saying their name. He is looking into it. I am wondering if this is a feature only possible while in speed dial, or if it is some peculiarity specific to my iPhone, or that maybe I have too many entries in my phonebook (I believe that there are about 160 different entries...) Help! Please!

I think the voice recog only works w/ the voice tags you add to #s in the speed dial list

I am suspecting the same thing. It's just that my salesman claimed that voice recognition of "Name" should be available from the phonebook. He says that he has done it before. He is a good guy and was embarrassed by the fact that he couldn't make it work. He said that he would discuss the issue with his dealership's tech wizard and get back to me. I think that voice recognition is only available in "Speed Dial." (otherwise what would be the purpose of speed dial?)

Hey, I have a 2009 TSX and an iPhone as well. Unless your Handsfree system is different from ours, you have to manually record the voice tags yourself. Kinda of a pain if you have a large # of contacts. Also, you can program a contact with more than 1 number this way (ex. Office and cell #'s).

My phonebook has been downloaded. Now, like most people, my phonebook changes due to adding/deleting contacts. So i occasionally have to delete the phonebook and download it again. My question is - Would I need to re-record my voice tags to get the audio feature to work each time? If so, then the system is useless, I may as well use my bluetooth ear piece rather than the HFL.

I have re-imported my phonebook on several occasions, and have NOT had to re-add voice tags to the names/numbers I already tagged. I only had to add them to any new #'s I imported. Like I said I have a TSX, but I assume the set-up is the same. Hope this helps.

so you have deleted the old phonebook and imported you 'new' phonebook with out messing up the voice tags/speed dial info?

What year TSX, because the 4G has changed? If you guys had seen my other post, the 4G is now using Pioneer in the Nav system replacing Alpine. I import my iPhone address book when I do updates, and the voice tags don't change at all CRXB, maybe it's because I didn't change the contact for that particular speed dial. The limited thing about speed dial is there's on 20 storage spots, it used to be 50 in the 3G.

DLeeWbb, I must interject here, your salesman/dealer is a good guy, but not a helpful guy! These guys sit around all day shooting the breeze talking about garbage. Most of them went to training too! If I was the GM, learning the in's and out's of new car would be job #1. How else do you get customer satisfaction? Look what you did now, asked for help and posted in here to find answers. It's sad ain't it? After we purchase the product, the consumer usually ends up knowing more than the seller as we care 100%.

Certainly a very valid point. I'm still not clear on what to do. I seem to be able to record voice tags when I go to "speed dial." If you can record voice tags to every contact in the general phonebook, I would like to know how to do it....

That's it then. That's what I thought because there are twenty positions in the "speed dial" section...

I never deleted the old one, just selected import again without deleting. That way it only adds/subtracts the #'s that have changed, and leaves the ones that were already there. This is so you don't have to re-voice tag everything.

you have probably already looked, but the speed dial/voice tag stuff is around page 443 in the owner's manual - appears limit of 20 speed dial / voice tags like bmode said. To dial other numbers in the phone book - it looked to me much like picking a selection from other lists - you see your phonebook contacts - spin the dial - say the # you want to dial is the 4th listed on the screen - it looked as if you could press the main selector knob to dial the # or say something like "#4"

I set it so when I press the vc button on the steering wheel and say, "call Charles" or any other name I programmed in to the system it dials that person on my phone book.

If you got that to work with your entire phone book that you downloaded to the TL NAV and not one of the speed dial positions 1-20, your a lucky dawg Evocative. It doesn't work with my iPhone, the only auto prompt VC commands that work are the speed dial contacts.

Also, CRXB and I realized that if one person has 3 contact numbers, we have to enter that contact as Bmode cell, Bmode home, and Bmode work in our iPhones so it will be identifiable in the Nav window. Otherwise it populates as one contact three times and you have to remember which positions belong to which phone number? It kinda sucks for iPhone users in that capacity.

Yeah, I had to set the speed dial after the address book upload. The VC needs to hear how you say their names.

Thanks Tony - You answered my question. I didn't see where I could append to the phonebook, I just deleted and re-downloaded. I'll read further.

This is what my salesman says that he has done on other TL's but couldn't seem to accomplish on my TL...this is what I was hoping that I could do...

However, this has been my experience to this point....

This is what I wanted to do, but I have gathered from this thread that my salesman was wrong in saying that it could be done...

No, honestly I am the OP and I do think that you helped me. I just can't seem to be able to do what my salesman said that he did with other TL's. He is still investing the matter with his Tech people this coming week. I will let everybody know if he discovers a way that it can be done. I am assuming that he was confused and that he has just done it using "speed dial." Which appears to be the only phone-related function that accepts voice tags.
