Incorrect password upgrading 2009 TL NAVI

I just bought a NAVI upgrade ("2011 Red DVD Map Update v2.00.7.90"), and went to install it on my 2009 TL SH-AWD.

The DVD loads fine, goes through the motions, and when prompted I enter the password I was given with my order. It keeps saying "incorrect" and I can't seem to get past that.

I called the NAVI folks (866-353-6868) and they are saying the password they gave me is correct for the device ID and VIN I gave them at the time of order. They tried to generate a new password, and it keeps giving the same value that doesn't work. We verified the device ID and VIN. They referred me to the dealer.

The dealer wants to charge me $115/hr to take a look , as this is an aftermarket upgrade from their point of view, and not supported or covered by warranty.

Needless to say, I'm quite reluctant to pay them, given I just paid close to $300 (ripped-off in Canada ) for the upgrade, and don't feel like paying more for someone to figure out what the problem is.

The NAVI folks are suggesting the unit is not getting the VIN correctly from the car. Is there any way I can verify that? I went to the diagnostics screens in the NAVI unit, and don't see anything obvious.

HELP!!!

Hi,
Fellow CDN here, going through your same pains. Where acuranavi left it with me, is they are trying to generate a different code. They tell me it takes 7 business days.

I think the whole thing is ridiculous. We are already paying for an overpriced update, with a 30% exchange rate even though the dollars are close to par, now they secure the thing with some 16 digit code that is verified against your vin and device id. Holy overkill!!! For what purpose?? Like someone is going to take out their nav unit and install it in another acura tl just to save the map update cost?

It takes 7 business days for their it guys to generate a new code?? I think not.

Did you get anywhere?

I wonder if this is an issue with Canadian VINs (or NAVI units)? Anyone else out there with the same problem???

They regenerated the same code a few times over the phone (called back multiple times, different agents). The code comes from the VIN and unit device ID, so unless those change, it will generate the same code. Not sure why they told you 7 days...

The earliest appointment I could get with the dealer is 2 weeks from now, so I guess I wait until then. I made it clear to the dealer that they said it might be an issue with the NAVI unit not picking up the VIN from the car. Hopefully they get it sorted out, and it gets paid for by warranty.

They actually sent an email today advising they are updating their code generating system and will have a new code for me next week, which they guarantee will work.

I still don't understand why the vin has to be part of the validation.

Thats fine, so use the serial # / device ID of the nav unit. No need to further complicate it with a vin as well. Obviously it causes problems with their software. Its only a map update for gods sake.

You're not required to update the maps in your NAVI unit, so it's a non-factory non-dealer add-on (from their point of view as explained to me), so it's an aftermarket upgrade.

Did you leave them an email to contact you at?

They haven't followed up with me at all since my last couple of calls. I guess I'll call them on Monday to see what's up.

It would be nice to have it working before my upcoming appt to take it in to the dealer, who may still end up charging me...

Yes I left them an email contact and they did indeed get back to me. Hopefully I receive the new password early next week. Will advise

they use your vin so you cant/dont give/sell the update after you install it since you dont need the disc after you update it...

What do you think of the upgrade? Any noticeable differences?

Not done the upgrade yet, I set it for "background" -- the drive in to work was long enough for it to do the first stage (takes about 40mins).

The overall update says 3.5 to 5 hrs -- should be done sometime tomorrow...

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know it takes so long to apply the upgrade. Am interested to hear what you think once you've had a chance to compare.

I went for the full power update which says takes 2 hours. In my case it took between 1 and 1.5 hours.

The update seems good. I live in the burbs just north of Toronto. The new subdivisions in my area now appear in the map database and a couple of newer clublink golf courses now appear as well

Thanks for posting. It's good to know that if we do upgrade, we're getting something for our money :-)

The Timmie's in the parking lot I was stopped at earlier today wasn't in the database -- they've been there for years...

I noticed a lot of restaurants are listed more than once with different spellings.

I wasn't going to leave the car running for 2hrs.

Home to work is about 40mins, which was enough to get it over the first chunk. It's quite happily updating individual provinces and states now, fanning outwards from BC. The update status map is kinda neat to watch...

Acutally you don't have to leave to car running continuously for 2 hours. Just shut off the car and when you start up next time, it resumes at the previous spot. Didnt see any update status map with the full power update. Just a "windows" type update bar going from 0 - 100%

For some reason I thought the "full power update" (2hrs) mode wasn't restartable, just the "background update" (5hrs) mode.

How much did you people pay for the upgrade?
My letter said $185 (USD) plus tax free shipping, but I heard of a $99 special?
Anyone have info on this?

2010 TL Tech

I just got the red disk update via Fed Ex. I called the dealership and they will do the install free but if the install is straight forward "follow the defaults", I can do it myself.
The thing that worries me is screwing the whole fricking navi up and the install winds up costing a bunch of non warranty money. Is there hazardous (to the navi) stuff involved and if someone is a semi-nerd, is it safe to do the install and save a day at the dealership?

thanks

Installed the new nav DVD after reading the instructions. The install was easy and everything works well. Recent changes in the roads around Tallahassee show on the map. They didn't show on the 2010 nav.

The upgrade disc is worth the price.
