HDD to CD question

Does anyone know how long it takes for HDD to rip a new CD? Do I have to let the whole album play through or does it rip faster than that? I have only put in 1 CD so far so I don't know the speed of ripping.

From page 319 in the 2009 TL Owner's Guide:

"Tracks from music CDs are recorded at four times the playback speed. You can listen to tracks as they are being recorded."

also, if you don't want to rip certain songs on the cd, just skip the songs, and they won't rip until the rest of the cd is done. so after you rip all the songs you want to rip, eject the cd.

Also, you don't have to listen to the CD while it is ripping. You can switch to XM or other radio and it will finish ripping.

Well the only way to get music onto the hard drive is by letting it rip CDs, it sucks but thats how it works. What I did was buy a CD-RW, and burn audio CDs with CD-Text included from mp3s on my computer. Then I let the car rip them to the hard drive. It's slow, but I'll eventually end up with a ton of my music on the car's hard drive, which will be a nice experience.

I don't have an iPod and this doesn't justify buying one, I'm not going to get one just to stuff it in the car. Originally I just put songs on a USB thumb drive, but playing music off the hard drive is a better experience since you can play by artist, album, genre, create playlists and the music is permanently available in the car without me plugging anything in.

I have a BlackBerry Storm and use it to stream music via Bluetooth Audio in my TL.

Works beautifully and is integrated with the steering switch/console controls. (Fwd/Rwd only). The BlackBerry sits nicely above the gear shift against the storage door so I can see what's playing at any time.

Also this allows me to create and use my playlists directly from the BlackBerry.

Well crap, I just recently bought my TL and I liked the HDD feature in the car and I was hoping I could just rip whats on my mp3 player but apparently not. Would it have been that hard to do? I wouldn't think so.......

^^i think there is legal issues with doing this. If we could do this, you could use my MP3 player and rip that and i could rip yours to my hard drive.

This is what the dealer told me as well. Also that it would make managing MP3s on the HDD difficult considering the controls it provides. It's not like you can plug your TL into your laptop and sync file in an organized fashion.

But that'd be a nice feature!

Also interesting is how you get around legal issues when and if you sell the car with CDs ripped to the HDD. Does the new owner automatically own that content that the previous owner provided? Does the HDD have to be wiped in order to sell the car? (I'm just being obtuse, but I can totally see some RIAA lawyer getting his knickers in a twist over this!)

if i had to guess, i bet it falls under the same thing as you can burn as many copies as you want of your own cd's, as long as you don't distribute them with out "expressed written consent" So i'm guessing, if you follow the law, you should probably wipe it clean

Yes. You can also delete individual songs from ripped CDs.

I have my new car for 2 days now, still reading all these user guides, and it's unclear to me at the moment. I need your help to avoid wasting hours on this. Tks in advance.
Sounds to me that there is quite some limitations in what can be copied to the HDD....DVD-A, .mp3, .wma all seems they cannot be copied on it, am I right ?

You can copy music CDs (CD Audio) like music CDs you buy or make - but that's it. You can set it do it automatically. Happens in the background while you are listening but at 4x speed. There is a bit of a delay when you insert a CD and it actually starts copying a bit of the music to the HD then starts playing from the HD. While it records you are listening to the HD. When it is done recording it switches you back to listening from the CD at the next song. You can delete individual songs or entire CDs from the HD. You can also rename songs or CDs.

Does any one know what type of HDD is built-in and if it's feasible to replace it with a new one?

Is there anything built in to allow the backup of the audio files on the harddrive of a 2011 TL? I ask because reconstructing the audio files in event of a hardware failure would take hours, if not days!

...you also have those play options with an iPod. Of course you have to plug and un-plug, but you always have the most up to date music collection available to you.
