Door Mounted Tweeters

Hey guys... im in a 2012 TL and looking for a complete audio upgrade over the course of the winter. I'm dead set on Focal KRX2 components for the front and still researching the rears. However, my dilema is with the tweeter. I think it will be a bit tough to squeeze the 1" Focal tweeter into the existing port (even though OEM is 1" it still looks tight). I'm also not a fan of messing with the side curtain airbag and would rather disconnect the existing tweeter... leaving the side curtain intact. That being said, I'm left with only one place to mount my tweeters... the doors. I wouldn't normally be opposed to this as I've done it in previous cars and IMO enhances the soundstage... but this is the nicest car I've owned. The Focal tweeters are nice and not tacky looking by any means, but I'm still hesitant to take a hole saw to my new car doors.

Any feedback/pics from somebody that's done this?

I used Focal 165 KR2's up front and the tweeters were direct replacements in the pillars with a vy, vy minor mod to hold it in place behind the stock grill. I also used 165 KR's on the rear shelf, and used a 3" Focal for the center channel (forget which component model this was lifted from). My system was centered around and MS-8 and a couple of JL HD amps. The staging was very impressive after I got it where I wanted it.

You can put the tweeters in the A Pillars without messing with the side curtain airbag as long as it is done correctly.

You can put the tweeters in the A-Pillar easily and even modify the pillar like below. Before the mod, I just had the tweeters behind the OEM location. You will not bother the side curtain.

That pillar looks sharp. If you don't mind me asking, how much did that run you? I actually like that look better than the OEM.

I think they were in the $400-$600 range. The modification was done using fiberglass.

ouch... after paying a grand for the speakers, I may need to hole saw the doors (as much as I love the modded pillar).

It's all personal preference. Are you going to leave the KRX2s in the TL when you get rid of it? If so what about the hole in the door. New A pillars run around 60 bucks each.
