Can't skip songs with new iPhone
I just got an iPhone XR and although I can pair with the Bluetooth module and stream music, I am not able to skip songs using the steering wheel or head unit. This was not an issue with my old phone (Samsung Galaxy S7). Everything works fine in my truck, which has an aftermarket JVC head unit. Is there some known incompatibility between the Bluetooth module in the older TLs and the newer iPhones? Is it possible to upgrade the Bluetooth module with a newer version, or even an aftermarket one?

strange you mentioned this. My android tablet has been having this issue too. I use Spotify for music When it doesn’t skip, I usually skip using my tablet and then my steering wheel button works again.

get a usb cord and plug the phone into the center console, fwd will work way better and you can skip songs way faster than bluetooth. Only catch is that you need to have a MINIMUM of 1 song on your iphone otherwise it will say no music/no ipod. I used the free U2 song that apple gave out and got it to work so spotify, youtube, etc work no issue. Plus the phone charges a bit too.

This has been an issue with my iPhone since day 1 with the factory HU. The iPhone intermittently does not recognize that the car has playback controls. I find that restarting bluetooth on the iPhone will usually fix the problem.

Yeah, it stopped working again. It's hit or miss. I ordered an aux cable so I'm going to give that a try. Sound quality should be better over cable too, which is a plus (obviously).

The aux cable arrived yesterday (lightning to 3.5mm stereo) and the sound is significantly better, although the volume level is decreased several dB. It's okay, I can adjust my DSP to compensate. I'm still bummed that I can't change songs without grabbing the phone, unlocking it, opening the app, etc etc. Doesn't anyone make an iphone/ipod USB integration kit for the 4th gen TL that allows full control? I found two products (one from PAC and the other from OEM Auto Sound) and they list the 2004-2008 TL, but not the 4th gen.

You can do it all! Forget THE 3.5mm cable. use the one you use to charge your phone!!!!
INSTALLED FROM THE FACTORY!!!! PLUG IN PHONE VIA USB AND USE AUX BUTTON ON RADIO TO GET THE USB OPTION.

I have the same issue with my Iphone 11 pro max.
However if I play music from my phone before turning the car on, and let me phone connect to my bluetooth automatically when I turn the car on, VOILA I have head unit/ steering controls of playing pausing and skipping.
BUT if you turn the car on, then connect to bluetooth you won’t have the functionality for some reason.
Some people buy an aftermarket bluetooth single that they plug into the usb adapter and run the 3.5mm into the aux port and then just play bluetooth via their aux input. This can help if you lose bluetooth signal often while driving.
