Can you play FLAC through USB?

Sorry for the noob question. I've tried using adobeman's software in my old type s but got tired of burning dvd's. Now that I can listen to music through a USB stick it makes everything a lot easier but the sound isn't there. Is there a way I can get FLAC (lossless) to play on the usb drive? Is there a way I can get 5.1 audio on the USB drive?

What if I use a netbook to store all my music on and then plug it in to my car stero via AUX, will I get 5.1 this way?

Thanks!

I am SWAG'ing here but I suspect the only way you can get 5.1 will be with DVD-A's.

And the AUX jack is stereo only, so it's not happening there.

Ya I figured. Even though you have 5.1 on a netbook you would lose it once you go through AUX. Man this sucks... so much techonolgy and still the only way we can get 5.1 is through phyiscal media. NO ONE even uses physical media anymore. I guess my choices are totally limited since the ipod/aux/usb all sound like shit to me.

Probably the only way to get this is done would be through a carputer.

flac files play fine on my 2019 RDX.
I believe the USB stick must be formatted as Fat32.
The flac files I am listening to were ripped from CDs using dBpoweramp to flac format using the recommended level 5 compression. (There is some flac compression possible but it's still lossless.)

Flac formatted music can be downloaded onto usb drives under the proper format but the real question is whether the OEM head unit can actually decode flac files?..I don't know the answer to that but it's only offered in "higher end" aftermarket stereos but for an extra price of course. Your car manual will probably answer this.

Ya I play my Flac files thru my phone and pretend they are cleaning.
Have you tried this...might not work however it might. Go into windows make a copy that music, click on file name extension and change the file extension to .wav or .mp3. See if you can fool the car, .wav might work not sure about .mp3

Changing the extension won't help. It would still be a flac file with a mp3 extension. If the car stereo encoder cannot decode flac files, it won't play.
As I said earlier, my 2019 RDX plays flac files flawlessly.

Can play 16 bit flac, but not 24-bit

For my 2020 RDX ASpec, I can play 16 bit flac files from usb, but not 24 bit except
if the 24 bit file is stored on my phone and played through android auto. This is confusing to me, but
maybe my phone or android auto is down-sampling the file; no idea. I can play full wav files from
the usb. It's too bad I can't play 24 bit flac though. This ELS system is worthy of lossless file format.
