I have a 2010 TL SH-AWD with about 500 miles on it. I have noticed that when in sport mode, it shifts up to 3rd fine, but it just hangs in 3rd gear. I have got up to 50 MPH to see if it would change to 4th, but it doesn't.

I checked with my sales guy (who has been very helpful) and he researched it and said their tech guy said it does not change from 3rd to 4th gear until I get up to 84 MPH. Not sure what the RPMs would be at 84 MPH in 3rd gear, but I don't think I want to try that.

Can others with similar cars let me know if (and when) your car shifts from 3rd to 4th gear when you are in Sport Mode?

I too have noticed this. I do not generally drive in S mode on the highway. In S mode, I believe the tranny shifts at around 5000 rpm in any gear, and does not shift into 5th.

5000 rpm in 3rd will get you going pretty fast, in a hurry. I'd say your salesman is probably correct.

 

Don't know the exact speed, but yes it's somewhere in the 80s.

 

I don't think S mode shifts past 3rd gear. I can confirm that mine didn't shift out of third while nearly redlining, and hitting 90MPH.

 

I don't have the auto, but I read that the "S" mode only shifts as high as 4th gear. I haven't found anything either in the owner's or service manuals that show the actual shift points.

S Position (S) - To shift into the S position, press the release button on the front of the shift lever, and move the lever to S. This position is similar to D, except only gears from first to fourth are selected. The S position keeps the transmission from cycling between fourth and fifth gears in stop-and-go driving.

 

Go faster. It definitely shifts into 4th, not proud of myself but when it happened I was "engaged" with a WRX.

OK, I couldn't resist. S mode shifts from 3rd to 4th just before redline at about 100-105MPH.

I know, stupid thing to find out, but I had an open road and couldn't resist.

 

I would've guessed 94ish based on the downshift recommendation in the manual
