It’s for the usb connector to be held into when not in use.

The usb wire can either be plugged into your iPhone which will allow you control of your music via the Navi screen or you can utilize a small flash drive.

Had no idea. But I've had a USB drive plugged into mine from day 1. Only disconnect it to add songs or update then it goes right back in Probably one of my favorite features of the 4G. I know it's pretty standard with most cars now-a-days but I certainly don't miss the aftermarket USB systems the 3G had or the DVD-A issues I had to deal with.
