I change the air filter today. A little concerned that there was so much oily residue on it, with 33k on the clock. I'm not sure when, if ever, it was changed before as we purchased it this summer. Is this normal?
I'm assuming that pic was taken on the intake side. I don't think there's anything abnormal about it, seeing as you don't have control over the air quality your car is going through.
If you drive in dirty/dusty conditions the manual states to replace the filter every 15K miles instead of 30K miles. Also you should replace the cabin filter too!!
The factory filters are 2 stage paper and oil filters so I wouldn't be too concerned about residue.
Ditto, ditto, ditto. Looks normal and it's doing it's job nicely. For maximum performance and dependability I change mine every 15k miles which is about once a year.
Thanks for all the comments. I do not drive nor live an a dusty area. I purchased the car this summer from a small dealer who only deals with lease return vehicles. I did locate the previous owner who only primary drove it to and from his pediatric office. So dirty/dusty air is not an issue. The picture came out much darker than it actually is. My concern was that is has what appears to be oily residue. Is this something I should investigate further?
The oily look is normal from my experience. I've had 3 and sometimes 4 Honda's in my immediate family for over 16 years and every time I change the air filters they look oily. I think you are okay.
Think about it this way, if the filter is dirty that means it's doing its job. All that gunk never made it into your engine. I'd be more worried if it was spotless!

Man.. it's cool that you can locate the previous owner so you can know more about how well the car had been taken care of
