its pretty straight forward.

take out the lining in the trunk area, unbolt, and it should come off.

do you guys think its unreasonable of me to ask the body shop if i can just bring them the trunk to repaint vrs giving them the car for a few days....

i asked them if they would remove the trunk to do the work, but they said no, so i want to see if i can just bring the trunk....i dont want to deal with overspray....

not completely unreasonable but the body shop will probably want the whole car in their shop so they can properly match the paint on the trunk to the rest of the car.

they said they were only going to paint it from the decklid spoiler down, so that would leave the other half of the trunk to use as a match....

your concern for overspray makes sense. I would personally just take the trunk lid off and have them work on that. Only if you will get it back in a reasonable amount of time so you wont have to expose your trunk interior to the elements (rain, snow, dirt etc). unless you plan on parking the car inside during repair.

Its been a while since I pulled a trunk lid but the only problem might be how its sprung. Can’t remember about my TL but some use torsion bars for springs some of which might require a special tool.

That being said I would just give them the car & save the hassle of handling & aligning the lid to put it back on. If you are worried about overspray & best find a different shop.

I don't know if the 4G is the same but when I removed the trunk on my 2G, all I had to do was remove the cover, unbolt the trunk from the hinges (4 bolts), and unhook the trunk lock release cable from the locking mechanism.

That being said, when putting it back together the alignment was perfect, but I could never get the release cable to hook back into the locking mechanism perfectly. It took a lot of time to adjust the cable just right but I was eventually able to get it to work. It just doesn't feel as good as OEM anymore though.

Personally (as a painter on the side) i would be more worried about the paint color blending properly and having the right amount of orangepeel without the car there for them to have as a reference as i would be about over spray. If you bring it to a good shop you wont have any.

Also another thing to consider is that you may incur damage during the transport home and the instal
