Trade-In 2009 TL for a 2009 TL SH-AWD
So yea..after getting the 2009 TL end of November I'm already thinking about trading it in for a SH-AWD with all this praise. I've never done a trade-in before as this is my first car but how do they work. I had to pay like $5-$6 in titles and other accessories (LoJack, Wheel Locks, and Exojet (?)) before, would I have to pay for that if I decide to trade it in?
I'm really honestly hoping to be able get the AWD for maybe $2k more with the same accessories. - What are your insights on trade-ins?
How much do you think I can get for my TL when paying nearly invoice on it?

You need to chat with "PetesTL". He did exactly what you are considering and he hasn't wiped the grin off of his face yet!

Why does everyone do this? They buy the lesser model to save money, then trade it in and end up paying $6k more?
My advice is don't do it, and learn from the mistake this time. Unless money is no object.

Well I didn't want to save money on the less competent model but the SH-AWD wasn't out at the time and I needed a car since I'm almost out of college and just got a job.
But actually, sounds like I might cancel my appointment -_- I mean I'm perfectly happy with the TL, but if I can get it for what I want it for it doesn't hurt right? Definitely not the case heh.
So since I'm gonna be putting new rims on my car, how does buying rims work? All I know is that the 4G comes stock with 17s (right? lol). Would I have to get new tires too?

I know Pete said he got a good deal but typically once you drive it off the lot, it's trade in value has gone down about 8-10k. I know this from past experience many years ago and a few friends have also run into it. For them to sell your brand-new, but used TL, they will have to convince someone that you just wanted a SH-AWD and plus they can't offer new financing to the next buyer, and that's much higher. They may be willing to take off a few thousand on the SH but you're looking at paying another 6K on top of the difference in price between the TL and SH. It ain't gonna be pretty. Good luck, maybe the fact they aren't selling well could benefit you a little.

Many of these things are a double edged sword. If they are offering $1000 dealer cash (they are), it depresses the used market meaning you get (less respectively) for a trade. IMO, you are better off selling your car privately then taking advantage of the specials for the new car.

If you decide not to do it, do not test drive the awd, cuz let me tell ya man you don't want to know what your missing. Wait two to three years for the type s, unless they cancel that too.

A coworker recently got a Nissan Versa and after a month or two decided he didn't like it. He ended up trading it in for a Rogue and I was surprised when he said he only took a $1000 hit. I thought it'd be more than that.

Just graduated. 1st job. Terrible economy. Bought a $35k - $40k car.
Want to trade up after a few months - probably taking a good depr hit - to a more expensive car.
Gee, I hope you're degree isn't in Financial Services/Financial Planning.
Depending which Versa that's 5% - 10% loss.
So, 7.5% on, say, $40k = $3,000 upside down in a few months. Yeah, that sounds like a winning strategy.

Look, you can do whatever you want with your money. I was being sarcastic in the sense that financially what you are proposing is almost always a loser. If you're willing to throw a couple of grand away, what do I care?
Hope the job works out for you.
BTW - A car is almost never an "investment" - all normal cars are expected to lose value over time; an investment is expected to gain value over time.
