surprise to me - acceleration the same for TL 6MT as G37S

I was originally looking at Infiniti G37S 6MTs but for a variety of reasons thought a SH-AWD TL 6MT would be better for my needs. I thought I would be giving up some acceleration but after reading Car and Driver reviews it seems the two have identical 0-60 times. Thinking it was the AWD traction that was making up the difference I saw that the street start 5-60 was actually slightly better for the TL while the 1/4 mile was nearly the same!

2009 Infiniti G37 Sport Sedan - Short Take Road Test - Car Reviews - Car and Driver

2010 Acura TL SH-AWD Manual Road Test ? Review ? Car and Driver

Given that the TL is 170 lbs heavier (the Infiniti is heavy for its relatively small size!) and has slightly less hp I was surprised, however, the TL does have a bit more torque and both it and the hp peak at lower rpm. Perhaps the difference is in the gearing or Acura is under rating the hp?

^its the AWD system handling business.

IIRC, the FWD TL has a Horrible 0-60 time

Incorrect, the FWD TL has a better 0-60 time than the AWD TL when they're both equipped with auto transmissions.

You're right on that, totally different ballpark. Shows how much the automatic transmission eats the power and also how good of a manual Honda can build.

^so, to answer OP's question, the auto must have pretty great gearing to keep up with the G37

RWD generally loses more power to the wheel vs. FWD/AWD. A 330hp G37 is dynoed at about 270hp at the wheel, about 20% loss.

Also the Acura AWD system helps tremendously for that 0-60 test.

The driveshaft likely robs a lot more power than an axle going to the front wheel

No lol the OP is comparing the manual transmission G37S and the manual transmission AWD TL, the only person that brought up automatic transmissions was you when you mentioned the FWD model TL.

As the owner of a '12 6MT TL, I'm sure that there are a lot of cars with faster 0-60 times, but I have to say that one thing you will never have to worry about (assuming you have halfway decent tires) is wheel slip. That to me is important because a lot of cars may have faster times but won't be as consistent, even with traction control.

g37 is just more mod friendly.. so thats a plus.. if you plan to add more hp.. go with the g37.

...but how does that G37 feel in the corners?

0-60 isn't why I bought my 6MT TL. It doesn't hurt, but coming out of the freeway on ramp at 80+ mph brings a much bigger smile to my face than straight line speed.

5.4 seconds is pretty quick. Honestly, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5---hard to imagine you would notice a 10th of a second here and there. MT 4G TL isn't the fastest to 60 by any means across all cars. But it IS the fastest TL ever made, and AWD to boot. I'll take that over any G35-G37 any day.

G37 with sport package feels good in the corners. But I think I like the way TL SH-AWD exits the corners better than the TL. G37 Coupe has sexy exhaust note.

The 370z with sport package handle corners really really nice, but it's a sport coupe.
