S Mode TL SH-AWD - What is it really for?

I like to floor it every now and then...and want to make sure it is ok to do that on S mode. The rpm level is of course much higher on this mode...and supposedly it will not go into 5th gear...or will it at some point? I have used this mode and floored it up to about 100mph...then the rpm level dropped significantly. Couldn't tell if it went into 4th or 5th gear, or perhaps cut into 'safe' mode.

The owners manual does a very very poor job of explaining what the S mode does. Anyone know? Should I stick to D mode when flooring? I find it harder using the paddle shifters as there's a tendency to over-rev...although it is supposed to up shift when the max speed/rpm is reached for each gear.

If anyone can help explain how S mode should or shouldn't be used, I would really appreciate it. Or, let me know if there is some other site/link with info.

Thanks!

The s mode is for higher rpm shifting. It will automatically shift as long as you dont use the paddle shifters. Once you use the paddles in S mode you have to shift from then on cause the car will not do it for you.

S is good if you want to floor it. Although, it goes fast enough for me when its in D and i dont feel like shifting or draggin out the revs. I use S when Im feeling a little frisky, or taking a curvy road, or if Im trying to pass someone.

I also use the paddles to in D when I need to slow down faster. I downshift to use engine braking to slow down if there is immediate traffic or if I begin to brake to late.

In S mode, once you use the paddle, it won't shift automatically. Is there a way to back to the auto shifting mode in S without shifting out to D and back to S?

I embarrassed myself with a tune-cranking stop light run in M-1st in the RDX. I forgot I was in “S” mode and couldn’t figure out why the car wouldn’t go faster than 40 something, with a stuttered jolt from the rev. limiter. Then I put it in neutral and revved more.

Don't worry you aren't the only one here who's done that.... by the time you realize what you've done and hit the paddle shift up... you still have about another second of rev-limiter embarrassment to endure.

When I first got my 2010 TL, I thought the S mode was the same as my previous 2006. So I would drive in S mode and then try to switch gears with the paddle not knowing that the car already switched to 2nd gear and that pressing the padding would switch it to manual and back to 1st. Nothing like hearing the sound of the rev limiter and me scrambling to shift up. Definitely nothing like the 2006 TL.

I thought that if you shifted, but then left it alone, the car would take back over - that's at least the scenario that played out on my recent test drive. IDK how to drive a MT, so switching it to S is a total loss for me, but the salesman wanted to show me how the car would take back control if I wasn't doing something. I was like, ok, I'm still not going to use that function, but thanks for the info.

Anyone want to teach me how to drive a MT?!

I hope this is not a silly question - can you shift from D to S and vice versa while the car is moving - or is it recommended to do this from a stop? . . . if it is a silly question, let me have it!

that is only if you are using the paddles in D, if you are using the paddles in S, the car wont shift unless you shift, unless you are comming to a stop, then it will put the car back into 1st, but when you go again, you need to remember to shift, or else you will end up on the rev limiter...

No one has sad another reason for the S is to hold a gear. Kind of like how cars use to have 1, 2, and then D. Going up hill or down hill if you want to hold a gear S can also come into use.

I don't get much of a chance to use S mode here in Houston. The only corners I face is turning onto a side street or th eU-turn lanes under the freeways!
