Rust Rear Brakes

On my new 09 TL, there is rust on the outside of the brakes that is showing through. I took it to the dealer today and the service manager showed me the other TL's and they said based on the design of the brakes, the paint comes up the brakes(around the caliper) and rust shows through. Acura does not have a fix for this yet.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so what are you doing about it.

Thanks

Jim

I will take a picture tomorrow and post but it is not on the caliper or rotor, it is on the outside of the roter on the metal area. I dont believe it has any effect on the brake or brake surface.

talking about the area that's painted kind of a silver color? - actually called the 'hat' (between the wheel / and the braking surface of the rotor)

That's exactly it, the hat area of the rotor. Mine has got it on both rears pretty bad and the fronts not quite so bad. I'm going to mention it at my first service and see what they have in mind. It's a little embarrassing....

I wonder if it was a production 'batch' problem, as I got my SH in late December... maybe they have it corrected now?

I actually have rust on my discs as well. Looks awful, but no squeaks or screeching yet. How do we clean this off without creating issues?

I will let you know if that is the case. I live in an area that rarely sees rain and never sees snow. Ironically, it poured rain the day I took delivery!

SO MUCH RUST On mine too, it's extreme on the right rear wheel, insane. I cleaned it off, came back on it ! Maybe not completely rust, some due to the rain weather lately?

Guys, the brake rotors are cast iron. It rusts; Chemistry in the real world.

Best thing to do is get some good caliper paint (Duplicolor or even better G2) and paint the calipers, hubs/hats and/or outer edges.

If you clean the rust off and don't put a protectant/sealant of some sort, it'll just come back.

Just Got Mine Last Week

I also have rust on the rear rotors (hats). My car is in service today, putting on a rear spoiler, I asked the service manager to take care of the rust also. Let's see what he comes up with.

Here are a couple of pictures to show you what I am talking about. This is only happening on the rear brakes.

jimlenz - do you live in the snowbelt?

not a good close up, but my rotor hats are doing fine so far (Texas)

I do try to scrub them some when I clean the wheels

I see it on my '07 too. It's ugly and I understand the coating is cheap to provide so little protection. BUT don't expect a sasifactory remedy from the dealer.

Acura2009: don't think car wash/detailer would be the place. This is DIY stuff from the auto parts store. Maybe a body shop. But it's a HUGE waste of money - DIY.

Exactly, If you see snow and salt or alot of humid weather you are going to get surface rust. Zinc plating will help for a while but it will eventually develop. No way to stop it, it you clean it off it'll just come back.

Could this possably be a AWD only issue. I have the TL TECH and parked next to a AWD last night and it had tons of rust, even on the rims. After 2 months, nothing at all on mine and we have had lots of rain over the past few weeks.

I have rust on mine as well. Also was a problem on my G35x. I always assumed it was because they were iron, and subsequently said "Oh well" lol.

I had rust on mine. I took it to the dealer and the local Acura corporate service rep came thru and brought them some paint to redo all 4 rotors rather then replacing them all. Take it to the dealership and they will fix it.
