in neutral; the computer or ECU limits revs to 5k.

I believe vtec (where the cams switch over to a bigger lobe) starts at 5k. i understand that oil pressure is instant when the car is started; but maybe the 5k limit is there to limit lubrication issues.

^Standard practice on most computer controlled high output motors. Even my '96 SHO was rev limited in Park/neutral

I believe it is not good to run a combustion engine at high rpms with little or no load. That is why I would think. Let the flaming begin if I am wrong.

This "rev limit in neutral" feature is factory programmed inside the PCM to safeguard the engine by preventing the engine internals from flying apart at very high rpm under ZERO load.

But when the engine in under load (i.e., in gear), it can be rev'ed all the way to the red-line.

revving it that high without load on it can cause serious damage to your engine. be careful!
