Removing a strut with a broken strut mount

Hi - the front right strut mount on my 2009 Base TL is broken - lots of clunking and squeaking when driving. I'm going to replace both sides with new quick struts but my question is: will the old strut come out in one piece when the mount is broken OR does the spring have to be compressed while the strut is still mounted in the car? I don't want the spring to release tension while I am dropping the wishbone or at any other time. I want it to come out in one piece. I just don't know whether it is unsafe to remove with a broken mount. Thanks.

It all comes out as one whole unit, unscrew the bottom bolt and find out if there will be a shot or not.
