Regular Gas until shortage is out?

Regular Gas until shortage is out?
Heyy guys,
I'm in northern NJ and all the gas stations here are either closed, or only have regular gas. My 12 TL 3.5 has a bit over 25k miles on purely premium gas. Any issues if I run regular for a couple of weeks? (I'd say about 300 miles)

Should be no problem as long as you stay out of the throttle.

A hurricane had just occurred when I bought my first TL. There was a shortage of gas in NC where I'm from and all I could get was regular. So the first 2 tanks of gas were regular. After that though it was always premium. I noticed no real difference but I would not continue to put regular in it for a long period of time.

I would agree with most in that it will not do long term damage except for the odd pinging and lowered efficiency and maybe a reduced output (performance) but otherwise, it should be OK for a short term emergency situation....as long as you don't decide to go that route afterward Hope you guys recover soon....as a meteorologist, I love seeing big storms when they develop and seeing how powerful mother nature can be, but not at the expense of seeing the devastation and hardship it creates on people and their family....My thoughts and prayers go out to all my American friends directly impacted by this storm....

After doing some calculations (premium gas remaining in my tank plus it beige topped off with regular, I calculated the resultant gas mix to be 90.6 octane. Seems usable.

Regular gas won't harm the stock (= no aftermarket mod) engine.
With lower-octane regular gas, when the car is under load and the engine starts to "ping", this will be detected by the knock sensors, and the PCM will retard the engine timings to protect the engine.
As a result, do expect a serious loss in hp and engine performance as long as regular gas is being used.

At least your able to attain gas man. I've kept my TL parked for a few days, its a warzone here in Long Island, the gas lines are crazy long, people are fighting at some stations...who would ever think NY would be going through this?

Hope u'r doing fine in NJ,
and even in Manual it says "Your vehicle is designed to operate on premium unleaded gas... with a pump octane of 91 or higher. If this octane grade is unavailable, regular unleaded gasoline with a pump octane of 87 or higher may be used temporarily......"
I am pretty sure, it won't even hurt your warranty or anything like that.
And u guys take care,

Everyone's thoughts and prayers are with the folks in the affected areas. Especially with acurazine members!
One question, and forgive me if I am invalidating yet another section of the user manual that talks about gas additives (I think I read something in there?) ... but would any of these octane boosters help if 91 octane is not available and you have to pump 87 octanes? Would they mess things up more?

It's been as if all the Gorrilla's, Guido's, Goombatz, and Vinny Farrari's were on vacation on a deserted island somewhere. Who the fuck turned the power back on?
Hey, C'mon guys you know I secretly missed you.

That is actually what I just did yesterday. Regular gas, full tank and threw in 108 octane booster (all that was available in Autozone). Not sure if it makes a real difference but at least it gives me a piece of mind. Waited 3 hours to get gas so I'll take whatever they had.

^ I would be curious to see the data ... if anyone can plug in an OBD reader and check out the fuel trims (long and short) under these conditions with the added octane booster.

I had to begrudgingly use regular when I filled up last week as I couldn't find premium anywhere in North Jersey. I didn't get an octane booster and I agree that the car felt sluggish. I've never been happier to put premium gas in my car then when I filled up last night.

after the storm the gas lines were crazy and no premium luckily my other car uses regular so i filled up the TL with regular just in case but didn't drive it until the last 3 to 4 days and wow the gas mileage so far on a half tank is bad so im driving anywhere to burn it out i heard the mileage was bad but its bad

Regular gas is perfectly fine. You won't be driving around like a madman anyway.

Octane boosters boost octane by a fraction of a point

Please forgive the the bumping of the thread but I didn't want to start a whole new thread just to ask this question. So I looked for the closest I could find that was on topic and here I am.
Anyway, we've only had our 2012 SH-AWD TL for two months. It's my wife's car but I'm pretty much the one responsible for keeping the tanks in all of our vehicles full of fuel. However, this past week I didn't get around to filling up the TL and so my wife had to do it. She didn't know it required premium gas so she ended up putting 87 octane in it. She didn't even have to tell me she did it. I could just tell that something was off. Most notable was the knocking or I guess "pinging" coming from under the car.
So my questions is, will I need to run through a few tanks of the proper gas before this sound goes away or do I need to take it in for service? I've already burned through the 87 and it is not sitting with a full tank of 91 but the sound persists.

The car adjusts the timing and whatnot to combat knock so I highly doubt anything bad happened that requires servicing. Fill it up with premium and it should be good in a tank or so. If you are really worried, you can put Redline SI-1 Fuel cleaner or Chevron Techron in the gas tank. Put it in an empty gas tank and promptly fill up to about 1/2 tank.

You have your answer; Edward'TLS is exactly right.
For the record, my father-in-law runs regular (87 octane) in both his Acuras, and they've run fine for years. He does that because a dealer told him it wouldn't make a difference, aside from a slight loss in power. I run premium myself.
This reply makes no sense at all. Our TL's only need the higher octane due to the higher compression ratio in our engines. Most of the answers here show that this fact is generally well understood. To suggest that regular gas is "bad" for cars demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of this. smh indeed.
