Percent Window Tint

Hey, everyone this is my first post and I just want to get some insight on what to look for in window tinting. I see everyone has a wide variety of percentage and also brand. I have a 2010 black SH-AWD TL and was wondering if I should go with the 35% legal tint or something lower (illegal where I am from). I know darker looks a little better but I don't know how long I will have this car. If I want to sell it in a year or two I don't want to pay extra to get the tint removed. Again, I am just looking for input on the subject and hearing about all your guy's experiences. Thanks.

Kilby, welcome to AcuraZine.

Each state guidelines a different percentage of tint. We have a Search Engine here on AcuraZine. Be sure and use it to see other threads that will tell you the percentage for your state.

I have 20% all around except the windshield obviously. Legal is 35% I think, but I've never been hassled about it on any of my other cars. I've also traded them into dealers with 20% tint and never had to remove it prior to the deal.

%35 is legal in my state. I had %20 on my previous car and never been bothered by the cops . If you want tint, go at least %20 because %35 (at least to me) is pointless.

Personally while I may not agree with certain laws, I would stick with legal tint for a variety of reasons. If it is a lease you may be charged for the removal on turn in. Some states like NJ are very strick about things like tint and hands free. Contrary to others I do not feel 35% is pointless! I find it a good balance that allows good visibility and still makes the car look good. If you look at my garage here you will see my Audi has 3M 40% tint and I get compliments all the time how it goes well on the car.

i have 35% in NJ, black interior and its nice. anytime a cop is around, i just open up the sunroof and theres enough light inside where they dont care to pull me over. if i could, id go with 5%, but NJ has a no tint law up on the front windows.

What about during inspection? I don't have a "friend" in the business.

LMAO, thug life!

35% is the legal limit in FL. I had 5% on my first three cars and 15% on my last two, including the TL (see below). I've never had a problem with cops going that dark. The only issues I ran into related to the 35% on my windshield, and even then it was only a couple times over a span of several years.

I also had no issues when selling my cars privately or to a dealer.

*This pic actually makes it look a little darker since it's cloudy outside.

Wow... thats balls of steel!
I am too big a pv$$y and got 70% front and 50% in the black. Kind of pointless... I know lol

Looks like you are due for an inspection next year... I am curious as to what you plan on doing because they will probably fail you.

Tinted windshield

It's the second mistake that kills you, the goal is to avoid the first mistake.

I never had any issues seeing out of it, day or night. 35% is very light so it didn't hinder my sight. You could barely tell it was tinted from the inside, except for the heat reduction.

With that said I will likely never do it again. Though it makes a huge difference when driving towards the sun it's not worth the other headaches like the issues I had with my toll transponder (b/c of the metal in the tint) and the couple times I had to deal with Johnny Law.

The tint shop I got my TL done at said there are people lobbying to legalize the LLumar Air Blue tint on the windshield in FL. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

BTW, glad to see I made it back into your sig

mechanical defects are overlooked. tints are considered visual obstruction, but its "mechanical".

if your ever driving through delaware, i think a carton is for $40. i used to buy Reds, wanted to quit, tried ECigs, couldnt stand it, so i went cold turkey and started up at the gym. lost 15lbs and havent smoked in 5 months. anytime i really need to "smoke" i just grab the hookah and smoke a bit.

Maybe I am paranoid, oh wait yes I am, but if you get in a bad wreck and there is always a risk a lawyer will have a field day when they realize the illegally tinted windshield, or any other illegal mods (blacked out tails, replacement fi road headlights, etc) that could have impaired you or made your vehicle more at fault.

^ I never thought of this, good point.

I have 35% back & sides and never had a desire to tint the windshield on any of my cars.

I today's lawsuit happy society they will find anything to go after you, not to mention your own insurance company might have issues covering you fully if you they find out and they are defending you.

Had 20% front and back on my last TL, I think that was the most dramatic look. I will go 20% again on this one as soon as I get my tags from the dealer. We have a no front tint law in DE too, but had it for 9 years with no hassels, just had to get it removed for inspection.

Just can't get away with the really dark stuff here on the West Coast. Especially with Shorty as my Scrub. I'd be pulled over faster than a Pimp beating his hoe in Downtown.

for arguments sake, if the state doesn't inspect a vehicle for "vehicular sunscreen", you pass inspection, and get into an accident, cant you argue that the state doesn't find it to be enough of an issue to be a hazard, so it shouldn't be a valid argument for the prosecutor?

Sure your lawyer and their lawyer can argue all day long at $$$$ per hour. I love certain looks, like blacked out tails and limo black tint but I also don't want to get rear ended when someone can not see my brake lights. Lawyers suck, regardless if they are yours or the prosecutor, trust me, been there, done that and the prosecutor has an ego to feed and a score card. And no matter how much you want to believe they are honest and the justice system is fair, they all lie on both sides and the cops and prosecutors are tight.
