Oil Consumption 4th gen TL 3.7

What are people running on thier 4th gen TLs suffering from the oil consumption? I use mobil 1 5w-20 high mileage extended performance but wondering if i should be switching to a 5-30 or 10-30 or possibly adding BG RF-7 to add viscosity to help reduce the oil consumption. My car is not terrible but just around 1qt every 1000 miles. I'm at 103k and got the car at 72k. Hoping to keep this until 300k assuming nothing major breaks.

0W40 or 0W30 would be good to try and see if it reduces consumption. It might or might not, but no harm in trying. I think Mobil1 Euro 0W40 is on the "thin" end of 40...so try that.

I wouldn't recommend stretching oil change intervals to more than 5K miles

Keep up the maintenance with a good quality oil, and your consumption may decrease or it may stay manageable.

I believe the consensus is that the best way to reduce the oil consumption rate -- if you have an issue -- is to change the oil at 5K miles. When I was experiencing consumption a bit lower than yours, that was the advice from my dealer's service department, pending a fix from Acura, which I ultimately received. Prior to that fix, my consumption rate definitely increased, the more mileage went by on oil change intervals.

I was very surprised when I found out that Honda is replacing clogged bad design rings with new bad design rings.
Because of this consumption, your cats will not live to see 300k, therefore flush the engine or replace the rings.

I use whatever 5W20 full synthetic is on sale at the time, and 55,000km after the engine rebuild there are no issues. It gets changed out every 8,000km.

Engine rebuild? The J37 engine cannot be rebuilt because it does not have cast iron cylinders. If you mean simply replacing crowns and rings, then the next 30-40k will consume oil again .

Right, should have just said "engine replacement." After I had the oil consumption repair green-lit in March 2019, it took them until mid-December that year to get the parts. By that time, the engine was trashed, so instead of just having to replace the parts expected under the warranty extension it got new heads, block, pistons, cams, the works. Took the dealer 2 weeks.

Unfortunately, Honda did not update the oil piston ring and your engine will soon consume oil too.

No doubt, I will be keeping an eye on it. Other little things are starting to fail on a more frequent basis lately, and I have the itch for something new...

Perhaps it's time to take on something new?

It might be, though I will definitely miss this high-revving engine. The TLX-S would be the logical replacement, but maybe something completely different like a GR Corolla would be a nice change of pace (despite being tiny) and I could get back to a manual transmission. We have a new MDX for kid hauling duty.

Absolutely not, I have two of these myself, just if a person wants something new, then let him buy a new one =)

A better solution would be to build a j36, using a 4g tl base block and j37 crank, rods, heads. Have 2k miles on mine with zero oil burning.

Yeah, not a bad idea. Unfortunately, also not an option for everyone.

This is very expensive, it’s easier to buy a cheap J35Z6 from the front-wheel drive version and swap it instead of the J37A4

Well, obviously the most expensive part is the labor. Although, I doubt anyone would really want to downgrade from 3.7 dual vtec to a 3.5 single vtec, it is surely an option. And if the person was really on a budget, the j37 could be parted out or sold as is.
