Oil

you are correct.
the MID does NOT know what oil you have.
there are no sensors to tell it if its a synthetic or conventional.
on the 2G and 3G TL's, we've seen Oil intervals of 15k with synthetic oil.
A synthetic oil is classified as a Group IV or Group V. which most M1 not meeting these classifications.
their 0w-40 is classified as a Group IV tho.
their 0w-40 has a HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) rate of 3.8 or 3.9%
you want an oil with a high shear rate.
so, it doesnt shear.![Captain Obvious](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/captainobvious.gif)
unfortunately, the extended performance oils are made to shear. with a low HTHS rate of 2.8%
I am running a redline 5w-30 with A HIGH SHEAR RATE of 4%![Thumbs Up](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
yes, I can run extended intervals. 10k miles to 15k miles, however the oil filter will not last that long. I run the sk2 oil filter. the M1-110

Ok
Also, please dont useprobably ALL CAPS. It signifies yelling.
As for the oil, why would you check it every 500 miles? What are you expecting to see as for a difference? The MID doesnt have the capability to know how the oil is doing. Looking at the color does nothing and doesnt give you an indication of how its doing. If you really want to know how its doing, Get a sample kit from Blackstone labs. Then when you change your oil get a clean sample of your oil as its draining out and send it to them. They will test it and tell you how the oil is doing.

I realize this discussion has gone well past the practical info originally requested. I'm (still) interested for academic reasons only.
Justnspace, thanks for the info and the spec sheets.
I'm not arguing with your information but I don't see how the shear rates have any bearing (hey, a pun) on choosing an oil for a regular car engine driven by a commuter. You are claiming that you are using a high performance oil with better specs (shear resistance) than everyday oil. How do you expect to benefit from that in any tangible or measureable way? I have run several vehicles well past 300,000 km using regular conventional oil with no issues. Why would the average car need the high quality oil you are discussing? Or are you just suggesting that you are "minimizing risk" or "maximizing protection" to the nth degree?

also stated, general consumers will be okay with a regular oil.
however, I am not a general consumer, thus i can get away with a better oil.![Big Grin](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
i'm not here to convince any one to switch, as the general masses are fine with a regular oil and their car will last over 300,000 Miles.
I do it because I am single. and have the cash on hand at the moment.
i track my car and run that shit hard as fuck, almost to the point of abuse.
this is just me.
but I do love to teach and spread the wealth of knowledge

This is the third thread you've created concerning the exact same topic in less than a week. I think you're doing the internet wrong, Ron.
Why not try Mobil 1, and be done with it?

And while you don't need my permission, just so I know, how many more threads will you be starting asking if you should use Mobil1?

Probably change the oil and start another thread about his oil change to Mobil 1. Should write to the company since hes promoted their products more over the last week than the company advertising department has over the last month

you could have also typed your question, maybe phrased differently, into google for a plethora of information on the subject.
The "leaking" thing for the most part is a myth. Mobil 1 is a good, well priced oil. If you want to get into base stocks and all that other stuff, go to bobistheoilguy.com.

Are you kidding me!! This site is for CAR questions and quotes, not a bunch of cussing. Just answer the questions with normal language and leave your sour mouth out of the answers. Wash your mouth out with soap - worked for me!

You may not mind the caps but others do. Using all caps implies yelling. Do you want others to think you are yelling? It's just proper etiquette.

I've been using full syn in my TL motors with 15 intervals for over 60k combined miles. There are NO long term side effects other than a happier motor.

Since we're on the topic, which oil would be best for stop and go traffic within a 2-3 mile radius to and from work. Based on my calculations, it will be less than 2000 miles a year. Change oil every 3,6, or 9 months? Penzoil Ultra has been good to my 09 Pilot.

You guys gotta be kidding me. Change the oil already. If u r not sure how long the oil will last, just change it every 5000 miles or every 6 month. Oil and filter are cheap and it takes 20 minutes to do it. My local Honda dealership does it for $20 with a coupon and yes it is conventional oil but i change it every 3000 miles!!!! So for me, im going to stick with that. For my civic i use mobil 1 and change it every 5000 miles. It's now 9 years old and it still runs like the first day i bought it! No leaks or oil consumption.

Once upon a time there were three Billy goats, which were to go up to the hillside to make themselves fat, and the name of all three was “Gruff.”
On the way up was a synthetic oil plant they had to pass; and on that synthetic oil plant lived a great ugly troll , with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.
So begins The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a classic Norwegian tale of gluttony and violence, which is, after all, par for the course as far as fairy tales go. And the best fairy tales pull no punches when it comes to being profane, scary, politically incorrect, and generally unwholesome for members of the Acura forum. Lol
Or so one might think.
