Need to replace rotors and pads, upgrade suggestions?

Hey guys

I have a 2012 TL FWD. 59k miles. And I need to replace the rotors and pads.

My goal is to upgrade the performance and appearance without breaking the bank.

OEM parts are +$500

So far I found this.
http://www.autoanything.com/brakes/stoptech-slotted-street-brake-kit

$368 which is not too bad. Reviews are great and auto anything is a reputable site.

Any recommendations or suggestions ?

I just sent you a PM. However, after sending it I realized the site I linked to is actually cheaper than the one you linked above but as I mentioned those parts come with a lifetime warranty* (not 90 days / 3k miles). I said in the PM that it was slightly more expensive.

*Cross Drilled and Slotted, Dimpled and Slotted Brake Rotors include a Lifetime Warranty against Warping and Cracking. Slotted Brake Rotors and Drilled only Brake Rotors include a 2-Year Warranty against Warping and Cracking. All Brake Rotors include a Lifetime Warranty against Material and Workmanship Defects.

How about sending me a PM as well? I only have 36k on my car, though I think I'm starting to feel a slight flutter in the rotors (original brakes)

Me too! I'm getting a slight shimmy in my steering wheel. I only have 26k miles on the car. What's interesting is, the rotors seem to warp quick. I'm the 2nd owner, so I may have also been that the original owner was brake happy.

What would be considered the best brake upgrade, money aside?

OP,

Curious, were you told by a mechanic your rotors/pads needed replacement? I thought that in general rotors should last nearly the lifetime of the car, or at least 100k+ miles...

I'm curious as well but i've heard that resurfacing rotors multiple times would not be a good thing. My understanding is slotted rotors also provide some benefit so why not upgrade if it's time to replace pads/rotors anyway (cost aside).

My understanding is that you can't post links to sites that are not AZ vendors, but the link in the OP hasn't been removed so I'll post mine. The mods will just delete it if it is not allowed.

Brake Rotors Brake Discs Drilled Slotted Rotors

I want to mention that I have never purchased from this site but the price and warranty are great compared to others I've seen.

When I am in need of new brakes I will definitely be buying from there (dimpled/slotted).

Money aside, go with a BBK!

That's my understanding as well, though most will likely need to be resurfaced. With my last car the cost to resurface wasn't far off from the cost of new rotors, so I went with the latter and plan to do the same with the TL (steering wheel shakes when braking hard so I assume mine need to be resurfaced).

I went in for a oil change and the service advisor told me that I had About 5k miles left on the pads. So I am doing a bit of research for this upcoming expense.

I feel a vibration on hard breaking so I know the front rotors need to be replaced.

So I will go ahead and replace both. Pads and rotors.
I've used ebc slotted rotors and red stuff pads on my previous car, acura rsx. They were okay. But they were costly and dusty just for the fronts I paid $300 or so if I remember. Not trying to do that again lol

But keep it coming guys! I am glad this thread could be beneficial for some members here.

Thanks!

I'm running slotted Adam Rotors with Centric Posi-Quiet Ceramic pads. The pad/rotor combo performs well and there is barely any brake dust.

not honda rotors. They are probably the worst I've ever experienced. My 04 RSX Type S warped/deposited very quickly, same with my O6 TL, my current TL. Also a friend of mine had this issue with his accord v6, his cousins v6 had the same problem as well as their odyssey.

It's extremely noticeable right off the bat when you are braking when going above 60mph, for a quick exit ramp or something else. From that point on it's down hill.

I never had this issue with my WRX or my wifes Grand Cherokee which is 1500lbs heavier than my TL with the same size brakes roughly.

These are the same rotors & pads that XLR8 sells under the "acurazine brake packages" moniker. They are cheaper from Autoanything though.

I have had the Stoptech cross drilled & slotted rotors with Posi Quite pads & SS brake lines now for 17K. They are quite and don't leave much dust. Its a good balance between sport (stoping ability) and stock (noise & dust). No issues so far.

SS brake lines are around $100 and give the pedal a firm feel to it.

I plan to get these when it's time for my 4g. Power Stop (K5856) 1-Click Brake Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B0C1U38..._YLhnvb0X88R6A

I bought a set for my pilot and they work well.

I just bought and installed excelerates acurazine package. 299 stoptech rotors and ceramic pads. Feel great, will see about dust but they definitely seem to perform well.

Just ordered the front pair for my tl as well. Had these on four corners of my old tsx and they performed pretty well.

Definitely look into our brake packages. We have put together pads and rotors into complete packages to save our customers money. You can order blank, slotted, or drilled, right from our website. The Stoptech pads are a great choice as they produce less dust and noise than other aftermarket pads!

Might have to replace my rears soon. Just wondering what the advantage/disadvantage of drilled/dimpled/slotted vs plain ones in terms of durability?

Just get plain vented rotors. I don't get the slotted/cross drilled thing as it has no practical purpose on any car which is driven primarily on regular roadways.

There is the EBC option, I have one friend that used the combo on his nissan z.
EBC
2013-US-auto-catalogue
Redstuff Ceramic Brake Pads
USR Slotted Rotors

I like the slotted rotors, mainly due that I have had cracking issues with drilled rotors in the past.

We have owned a good number of Honda/Acura cars going back to the early 90s and have put up to 200,000 miles on them. We've never had to replace rotors on any of our cars. Pads, certainly, but not rotors.

That looks like maybe they're the RDX covers for the front?

I agree, I would stick with slotted. Less wear and dust than drilled in my experience. They also create less noise too.

And what's the difference between E-Coating and Zinc Coating?

The black E-coating is the black coating you see on the standard Stoptech hubs and vanes. These are present on all their 1-piece rotors. The zinc coating is used on the 2-piece big brake kit rotors to protect against corrosion. It is available on StopTech AeroRotors and is particularly useful in winter climates where road salt and other environmental factors may increase the likelihood of oxidation.

So basically the zinc coated ones are coated all over and the e-coated ones are localized to the hubs and vanes only?

Exactly. With a Zinc coated rotor, the whole rotor is coated so that 100% of where the pad does not touch is protected. With the regular black e-coating, most of the rotor is coated but there might be about 1-2mm between where the pad ends and the e-coating starts that gets that yellowish color. The gap varies by vehicle. Keep in mind even the zinc coating will eventually wear off.

It's not Stoptechs fault. All steel rotors corrode eventually. If you reeeaallly want to avoid corrosion I think ceramic rotors are the only solution, but they're way more $$.

This is amazes me. Every Honda/Acura I have ever owned has had warped rotor issues. Even on manual transmission cars where I minimize brake usage.

Mine and everyone I know with a Honda product shares this experience. Terrible brakes. My front pads at inspection last month were 7/10 and rears are 8/10 with 30k miles. The rotors are warped and/or deposited. Noticed it within a few thousand miles. Really bad at higher speed when braking. Never had a problem with other brands of vehicles.

I've only had warped rotor issues on two cars with my family -

Honda Pilot + Odyssey

The S2000 has been fine, my Accords have been fine, and we'll cross fingers to see how the TL holds up.

What brand of rotors are you guys getting? And are you leaving those little set screws in?

I've tried sticking to Brembo blanks which seemed to help the '03 Pilot I had for awhile. Paired up with OEM pads.

I've also had this issue with every Honda I've owned. This includes a 96 Accord, a 2006 Accord, my Acura TL (warped at 20k miles), and a friends 92 Accord that I drove for a couple of months. I've been through multiple sets of rotors on both Accord I've had.

I've luckily never had much of an issue on anything else I've owned.
