Need Opinion

I am looking at getting a 2010 TL with Tech Package. The car has 34k miles and on carfax shows to be a one owner personal lease.

Car drives and looks pretty good. Tires have at least 65-70% life left on them but not sure about brakes. The car is for sale by a dealer (non-Acura) and is asking $20,495.00 + tax and title.

The carfax does show an accident that happened on 02/26/13 and says car was towed (no additional information was provided). But carfax did not start reporting on it until 10/17/13. Car was sold at an auction on 10/07/13 and that is when the dealer purchased it. Dealer had a carfax dated 10/09/13 which did not show the accident. I didn't tell the dealer I has pulled a new carfax on the car and dealer acted like that car was perfect.

I called an Acura dealer to make sure it still had the 4yr/50k factory bumper to bumper and they did say it did until June of 2014. The only other thing that I noticed odd about the car was there was some oil residue on the engine top part.

I would like to know if I should purchase this car. If so, is that price good or should I offer a lower price?

Is it possible to take to an Acura dealer and have them inspect the car and tell me about it before I buy (yes I would be willing to pay $100-150 for a report).

I would also appreciate if you guys can provide any additional information about thing to look for and watch out for.

Thanks in advance!

Use that information as ammunition to get better pricing if you're comfortable with it having been in an accident. After you bring it to the dealers attention, ask'em how much do they know about it? They might pay dumb or just be men about it and come clean, they might not have more info on it then you do. I'd def get an independent mechanic to inspect the vehicle; not necessarily an Acura one, I don't hold them on a pedestal.

Posted this in another thread:

1) bring a paint meter reader if you or a friend has one available. Dealers have them as well, you might to ask them if you can use theirs under their supervision; it only works on metal panels.

2) Run your fingers across body lines. Pop the hood and run your fingers on the inside edge of the hood, do the same on the inside edge around the lights & fenders. Repeat around the gas cap, trunk & door edges. If the paint feels rough, it's been sprayed.

OP...I would not be overly excited about buying a car that has been in an accident unless you get a decent discount, but even then, you don't know what you are getting. I can't comment on the price as I am Canadian and our market and pricing is totally different but I would see if you could find something that hasn't been in an accident...at least, that is what I would do. My 2 cents.

Depending on the accident. Most dealers can dig deep into information on the accident. I just purchased a 2009 TL SH-AWD w/Tech and 69,000km for $22.5k and the carproof provided by the dealer did show damage. Further investigation that I asked the dealer to do, it turned out to be a cracked windshield, headlight, and fog light which was all replaced by the dealer (damage report. Not accident). If the accident on your car is over $3k, not sure about USA but under Canadian laws. Dealers are required to disclose this. Anything under $3k and they don't need to.
