Looking at a 2012 TL - What is your biggest complaints?

I am looking at buying a low mileage 2012 TL with tech. I would love advance but this looks like a pretty great deal.

I am a big techie and work in IT. Are there any complaints about the technology in the TL? I would like to be able to stream music from my Galaxy S4 to the car and be able to skip tracks with the steering wheel controls. Any issues with that?

Any other complaints other than technology. I had looked at the Accord for a while, but really prefer the styling of the TL but I want to make sure Im not making a mistake.

Thanks for the input!

It burns engine oil.

You have the AWD correct? I am looking at the FWD because of this. I am coming from a 335i so the AWD would be much closer to home for me.

Correct. It's the AWD's 3.7L-V6 that tends to consume engine oil.

I had an 11 FWD Tech w/18's that came off lease in April of this year and my oldest son (21) purchased it off lease.

It now has approx 19K miles on it and besides a faulty passenger window regulator it has been trouble free for the 3 1/2 years it has been in the family..

The way that me and my son care for cars I would expect it to run for a very long time..

Although I have an S4 I can't comment on it streaming music because I used either a USB or the HDD most of the time.

Interesting since I'm also in the market for a 2012 AWD Tech and this is the first I've heard of burning oil. How much oil are we talking about? How often are you adding oil between oil changes?

The burning oil issue has been mentioned on AZ many times.

I'm @ 50% oil life from the time of purchase. I've checked the oil a couple of times... haven't seen any issues. Simple check of the dip stick while filling up gas should do it, ya?

Thanks, I used the search (doh!) and found the Oil Consumption thread. Definitely have more reading to do. I read the first couple of pages and understand the problem now.

This should give a ballpark approximation, but still check the oil after it has been sitting overnight to be more accurate, just like checking tire air pressure.

My AWD TL is first Honda/Acura model that I have owned to consume oil, but I am not too concerned. The joy of power and handling plus SH-AWD still far outweighs the oil use.

1. I had a "creek" noise coming from rear seat area (covered by a TSB) that was very annoying but it seemed to fix itself after about a year.

2. Fog lights: UGLY yellow light paired with beautiful white HID headlights looks trailerpark. I guess they can be updated to HID or LED with a kit but I don't have the time.

3. Driver seat: Lacks a bottom side support adjustment. My legs sometimes lay on top of the side supports because of their narrow placement.

Very minor flaws on an otherwise perfect car for me.

Seat comfort used to give me cricks in my neck (I have gotten used to them or adjusted and understand they are made that way for safety) and the ELS (DVDaudio is what tip the scale for me to purchase) does not play .wav or 5.1 from USB. Besides that I like the car

You're welcome.. BTW I'm not suggesting this is a major issue and someone shouldn't purchase an SH-AWD if they want one.

They're great cars, only saying that it's been an "on/off" topic from time to time.

i don't believe your steering wheel controls can control your bluetooth music, the buttons on the main control panel will though,

I have a Motorola Razr HD. Android. I stream music via bluetooth and it works perfectly. In fact, if I switch to bluetooth on the ELS system, then simply hit the channel up on my steering wheel, it starts my audio program on my phone and begins playing the first song in queue.

Pros:
Reliable (AWD not as much as FWD)
Well appointed (even the base model)
Plenty of pickup
Great handling with the AWD (mediocre with the FWD)
Comfortable and spacious inside

Cons:
Dated looks
Not as fast as it's competition
Rattles, creaks, road noise all pretty bad
Transmission seems to be a bit jerky in city use (automatic)
MPG (especially the AWD)
Buttons everywhere (I actually like it but some think it's overkill)

i think i will really need to take the time and sync my phone to the system and play with it. I would love to see if it shows the track names as well as if it will allow steering wheel controls / center console buttons.

BMW does this crap where if you buy an 07 that was manufactured before a certain date it had different features / capabilities than an 07 manufactured after a certain date.

Is there any of that with the TL? What is the year with the most up to date features and options? What are those differences?

Thanks for all of the feedback. It is very helpful.

I had a Galaxy S4 and preferred the music on the USB for better controls. Last week I found an old IPod laying around the house and prefer that to all of the above. It is more work to sync to 2 devices...but I don't purchase music often. The iPod syncs with the car better.

I have a 2013 SH-AWD and only minor oil burning at first. 0-6500 miles I added 3/4 of a quart and none since (at 12,600 currently).

I have a '12 TL Advance and an iPhone 5. If I connect my phone using the USB, all the music information will be displayed. The audio steering wheel controls will work like you're wanting them to. If I connect through Bluetooth Streaming Audio, I can skip tracks but no music info will be displayed.

I usually connect my iPod using the USB and hide it away in the little drawer built into the center armrest. I love the voice search feature which can only be used with a USB attached device. I will typically stream Bluetooth Audio through my iPhone if I've left my iPod at home.

The TL is a great car. I know you're looking at Tech models but if you can find an Advance model, I would highly recommend it. I totally love the Blind Spot Indicators and the ventilated seats. Would not want to give up those 2 features. Also, the wheels on the Advance look so much better to me than the Tech stock wheels. In any event, either would be a great car. I love my TL.

coming from a n54/55 bmw?

I had a 135i 08 model and while it was plenty fast, reliability was not its forte let alone the handling. It felt somewhat disconnected.

pros and cons of TL awd SH
Pro:
reliability
lower cost to maintain overall
NA, i know turbos are fun but maintenance will always be higher for a turbo car, I have owned 2 now lol
handling feels much crisper and connected to me
much better seats, comfortable yet still very well bolstered

cons:
not the greatest fuel economy
not the fastest but in this car class size track days arent exactly realistic
propeller shaft if not already done under warranty
automatic tranny is ok, i miss my manual but that is a different gripe. It feels like other paddle shifting auto's like the new toyota camry

N54 with a JB4 so I really really miss it haha.

It is insane how much the maint was overall. when a tranny fluid replacement runs you 850 you know there is something wrong there.
