Found a tear in the leather of the driver's seat. No idea how it happened. I am worried it will continue tearing up and take the whole side area of the seat with it. What are my options ? Is there some kind of tape or leather type material that can be stitched/patched over it ?
Please advise.
Thanks.
Some spots on my seat are the same or worse than yours, I'm sure it could be patched but I'll be looking for a junkyard seat eventually. They're about $100-$150 up here in Canada so depending on your location it might be less.
Almost all 4G seats experience this, from what I've seen from looking at countless TL's. All three of mine had/have tearing, in some form, shape, or manner. The only one that was different was the ZDX, as it seemed that it had actual leather. I've seen other individuals use duct tape, or some other form of fabric tape, however, it doesn't look appealing. For my current white TL, I decided to just leave it as it is. Unless someone has a different, actual solution, reupholstering is probably the only legitimately proper solution. Another bandaid would be covers, like the Clazzio ones.
I think the only permanent fix is to reupholster the leather, unfortunately... I'm in the same boat.
I replaced that exact same spot with a Masta Plasta leather repair patch that sticks on, but not only did the OEM leather continue to tear around that patch, but the leather on that patch itself eventually wore away within a few years...
I was surprised to see the fabric (leather) is so thin. Its a miracle it survived so many years.
On RDX these years, the faux leather is indeed thin; however, the engineers designed a narrow armrest—which prevents it from damaging the leather, unlike on the TL.
there does seem to be quite a few highly rated patches on amazon actually. will have to give one of those a try.
and perhaps a little more leather tlc for some timely conditioning before anything else starts ripping up.
