Key slot in dash for push button start?

i got an 09 TL as a loaner today... i am familiar with the Lexus remote key recognition system and basically did the same steps when i got into the car this morning... just opened the door, put my foot on the brake and then hit the start button...

as i was driving, i noticed that there was a slot in the dash to put the key into... obviously i didn't need to put the key into the slot to operate the car... so what the hell is it for? is it a place to put the key?

oh yeah and initial thoughts on the 4G... my god i love the power, interior and navi is nice... the steering wheel is silky smooth... and the handling in not bad for a car its size...

Dealership told me it's for when the battery on the fob dies...

It's not to charge the battery on the remote read p 186 of the manual. See p 190 of the manual saying specifically this.

Also the remote slot is there for when your battery is almost dead or you have disabled the keyless entry system in the glove compartment. This is basically for valet mode. I imagine the light on the side of the slot only lights up when the keyless entry system is disabled, as an indication to the valet where to put the fob. That is my guess.

The late model BMW's have the key fob slot also. For BMW's without Comfort Access, you have to put the fob into the slot and press the Start Button.

When I had the loaner, I thought that was a "storage" slot for the fob/keys.

(Oddly my loaner did not have a Manual in the glove box; I couldn't look stuff up.)

page 175

Battery type: CR2032
Replace the battery if necessary.
To replace the battery:
Replace the old battery with new
battery. Place the battery so the
side is facing up. Snap the two
halves of the remote case back
together.
Remove the built-in key
Remove the upper half by
carefully prying on the edge with a
coin.

You guys got it all wrong.....the slot is there to put the "special" key in to initiate the Cloaking Device. It's right there on page 756 of the Special Operations manual. Read it.

Here is one crappy lesson I learned about the fob holder. One night I was out and the valet had the fob in the holder. Usually I take it out and place it back on my keyring. This night I returned home and walked right into the house leaving the fob in the holder over night.

Here's the fun part. Car dead the next morning. Totally DOA! The fob keeps you car in accessory mode. Always remove the fob from the holder.

Infinity has it in their G35 in 2007 and Toyota has it too. I think now everybody has it.

And make sure you don't keep your cell phone and keyfob together. If the phone rings, your keyfob will be disabled. You cannot open and start your car. Got to call dealer to re-program it. They are working on the fix

Yeah I doubt that is what happened. I store my phone and fob next to each other all day. No problems. Most likely you fried the fob by keeping it next to a magnetic field such as your microwave or TV.
