Key fob cover replacement/cover/paint??
I recently bought a 2009 TL SH-AWD.
I LOVE this car.. it is so nice. I came from a 2006 RL...
My CPO car came with two remotes.. it is obvious the former owner used ONE key the entire time he leased the car as one is scratched to hell..the other looks BRAND NEW.
rather than trash up the nice one, I'd like to keep it nice and fix up the scuffed one or replace the outer cover.... on a former car.. there were companies that made outer covers..and it was easy to take an old trashed up remove and just transplant the guts over to a new case.. cheap and made the key fob look brand new.
on the TL, since it has the cut key as part of the fob.. built into that slide out end cap thing - not sure if it is easy to just buy a new outer "case" or if anyone even makes them.
i searched here first and only found threads where people were asing how to change the battery..
i found one thread o fa guy who covered his fob in carbon fiber type tape...
my goal is to make the key look new. a new key fob off ebay is like $100 and then i have to program it, cut the key.. etc. that's kind of overkill... i can just use key #2 for the time being... but since these things scuff so easily... i just wnated a new outer case..
does anyone make a new outer shell and then i can just move over the internals???
i'm surpised these keys are so easily scuffed... it's a poor choice of materials.... what are you all doing to fix it?
if there was a nice leather case I could just stick it in - i'd consider that. i found one link to some company that makes little slip covers but they look completely lame....
given that the fob could stay in yhour pocket 99% off the time, i'm ok with some leather case that completely hides the key and if/when I reeally needed to remove it.. i'd have to open or unclip it...
it is lame to have a really nice looking car and then a key that looks all tacky and cheap.
maybe a nice slim leather sleeve of some kind?

HA! We are on the same boat! My '09 too came in perfect condition except the keys! I guess we'll call ourselves "second key drivers". LOL... since driver#1 key is not very "presentable" to be polite. I was thinking of taking it apart and looking for thin carbon fiber material... or searching ebay for something from China (as usual...). An alternative would be a small leather case? Something that can fit an ipod shuffle.
Edit: by the way, the part number is 35113-TK4-A50 for the key and 72147-TK4-A71 for the #1 remote and 72147-TK4-A81 for a #2 remote. If you google the remote part numbers you'll find them anywhere between $50 to $150.
Sorry can't edit the above to add more info, but here it is:

Look at the "shell" parts at the bottom of the list. That is for a 2012, I think the 4 generation hasn't changed key fob shape over the years.

I think the fobs are exactly the same for all 4G tl's.
You could order some 3M carbon fiber Dinoc - and cut and cover some or all the parts of the fob.
I did only the sides and it looked good.

I can't agree with you more. I have my key 99% in my pocket and the keyfob looks pretty beat up. Car is only about 8 weeks old. My 6 year old VW keyfob presents much better that the new TL. They definitely should have used some stronger paltic or coating or something. If you find som eleather pouch please post it here, I will definitely consider it.
Also any links to the carbon fiber cover/film.
