I was only speaking in terms of owners on this board, so there's no "stumping" to speak of. I'm sorry you didn't get that.

Based on my personal experience of driving three separate TLs of the 4G variety, which I've already discussed prior in other threads. The only model I haven't driven is the manual.

You're calling me a troll? Please, spare me.

Again, you can leave the personal matters at the door.
Me?Call you a troll? Not at all. I was stating a piece of fairy tale and a fact about fisherman. Random thoughts is all.

Im sorry you have a guilty conscience that would make you assume that I was referring to you.

Considering your statement , which we both know which Im referring to, 4 people so far is not a fair share considering the large amount of 4G TL owners on this forum.

There are no personal matters being brought to this forum. Just basing our discussion off of your previous history of posts where your negative views on the TL are made so apparent. One would think that you would be better suited for a "I hate the 4G TL" forum. Or rather, stick to the 3G TL forum.

Just wanted to thank PeteTL and KeithL for all the posts that you guys made the last 18 months on your TLs. Very informative and in part why I have a 4th generation TL in my garage today! Some very nice cars you guys traded into.Really out of my price range, maybe when the kids are out of college! PeteTL,have you ever considered a vacation in Germany and picking up a BMW at the factory in Munich? That's the only way you can drive your BMW the way it was designed for,120 mph on the autobahn.

I still think the 4G AWD is an awesome riding car, I felt it was proabbly the best built car I have every owned, 19K miles not a single issue not a peep out of the car and as tight as day 1. I don't beleive the M37 will be that good, but then I'll probably be out of it in less than 2 years anyway. I wanted to stay Acura and want to come back, but until they get their styling resolved I can't see myself coming back. Alos I found the 4G color choices IMO sucked. The PM was a muted off beige, no real silver anymore and the grays and reds too dark and muted IMO. Look beauty is on the eye of the beholder and I am not trashing anyone that loves their 4G, but I just never loved it. I will be still stopping by since I have 6 Acuras in my blood, that does not go away over night.
Sorry to hear that you are leaving the TL family after owning what must have been a record number of TL's for 1 person! I've enjoyed reading your posts over the last couple of years. I have found your posts to be balanced and insightful. Enjoy your new M and I hope you'll be back when Acura comes out with something that you'll enjoy turning around and looking back at!

Thanks! I will be visiting here from time to time, the Acura DNA is too embedded in me. I suspect I may be back with Acura some day once they get their styling down. I love the M37 so far, but clearly I can tell the TL felt far more solidily built. And after driving FWD and Front biased AWD for 22 years I forgot what a rear drive ride is like so plenty of getting reaquainted!

Thank you for the compliments!
Hopefully, one of these days I might finally take advantage of an European delivery....maybe my next BMW? It's funny but from what I heard from a couple guys who did that recently is that the autobahn isn't quite the open road that it once was.....on many stretches, there can be quite a bit of traffic and accidents can be very, very serious. It''l be nice, though, to drive through Europe and do some sightseeing.

You're right, though, these BMW's were built (and perfected) for the open road. My 550i is an absolute torque monster! The difference in power between my 'ol TL and the 550i is like night-and-day times 10! There were a couple times last week where I came very close to plowing some cars in front of me because I wasn't use to having so much power come so fast when I stepped on the gas. The ease in which I can pass other cars on the road...whether going 30mph or 90mph....is downright scary. As KeithL mentioned earlier, it takes some adjustment to get re-aquainted to RWD cars again, but man, is it worth it!

Take a look at this:

^ I'm feeling a little jealous now lol. The only cars I was ever able to have that kind of passing power was in my 99 six speed type s swapped TL and my decently modded DSM. None of which were as luxurious as my new TL or your BMW.

I feel like I need to buy a RWD sports car to get my fix lol.

True about the autobahn, you can not always go fast, matter of fact there are speed limits in urban and curvy mountainous areas.Autobahns are toll free, consequently everyone including there brother uses them especially in the summer(vacation time) They have traffic jams we really don"t see over here at least not here in Boston. Road Construction is endless(cant"t have any potholes on a road with no speed limit) and did I mention the weather,It can suck for weeks on end. That being said, there are roads that are less traveled. My favorite is the Stuttgart-Weurzburg autobahn. I was there on a business trip with my rented Mercedes-e class last April driving at speeds that I wouldn't tell my wife about. I would love to take your BMW on that road. Then again maybe not, probably would kill myself and take 3 cars with me. Enjoy your new car PeteTL.

that's the smart way to do it. once you own a business - you can write off tons of stuff that anyone who works for someone else can't..

I am a gov't attorney, and whenever co-workers leave to go privater - they suddenly have a new NICE ride - titled to their practice.... leased.

$900 is not that bad. A friend of mine leased a new 911 and is paying about that much - again, leased to her practice.

This forum is full of a broad mixture of people - from varying economic brackets. To someone paying $900 in rent, a $900 car payment sounds extravagant. To someone with a $5000/month mortgage, $900 for a car seems fine.. I ams ure ther are plenty of TL owners on here who are in apartments, making sub $50k/year and buying the TL was a major expenditure... to others, like the OP, it was to tide him over until he got into the 550i....

enjoy the BMW. that looks really nice. that ambient lighting is nice. I assume all the door sills go off when you are driving and they are only on when teh interior lights are on?

just wait until Dinan makes a chip upgrade for that thing.. you will have a true BEAST!

Highly depends on where you are at and the time of day you travel. I worked for a German company outside Munich for a while and when I visited our CEO would drive us from Munich to Freiburg via Stuttgart. During the day, lots of traffic, driving back at night, my CEO was basically driving about 80% of the time @ 260kph in a 5 series wagon.

Eh, huh? North or South on 93 pretty much anytime in the morning or afternoon? x100 in the summer. Used to work downtown, very glad I don't work there anymore.

You know, driving fast is fun and some guys have orgasms just thinking about what they could do if they were let loose on the autobahn. But the truth is that unless you had some professional training, going 120+mph for any extended length of time is extremely dangerous. All it takes is a strong gust of wind, a small strip of broken asphalt, a small animal, a slow moving vehicle....or whatever to lose control of your vehicle and then it's bye-bye. The amount of time to react when you're going that fast is practically zero. For me, if I wanted to test the limits on a vehicle, it would be on a test track or on a closed road course. If I were to drive on the autobahn, it would primarily be for sightseeing and not to see how fast I could kill myself.

Yup....everything's relative. One of my old college friends is a hedge fund manager who lives in a 7.2 million-dollar house in one of the most exclusive and affluent neighborhoods in Chicago. He owns 5 ultra-luxury cars and calls his Bentley GT his "beater." He looked at my new 550i last weekend and called it "cute" and said he would most likely buy it for his 17 year old daughter.

The Dinan stuff are always great but my car is leased so no mods are planned. Besides, my 550i is already too fast for my tastes. Just this afternoon, I overtook a guy in a tricked-out Mustang Cobra with very little effort. To see the look on his face was pricless!

After thinking about what Pete did, I feel stupid buying the TL so quickly and outright (which I attribute to the hatred of my hastily purchased 09 IS 250 AWD). Many of my colleagues (physicians and dentists) lease their vehicles through their practice (S-corps). Lease payments are deducted from the business as an expense, and lowers the taxable income; it's literally a no brainer IMHO, especially in the upcoming years when o-almighty Obama will soon be raising tax rates on those making >$250k/yr to pay for his ridiculous health care reform fiasco.

I have my eyes on the new MDX and Cayenne Hybrid. I'm still an employee, so I have no perks for leasing; I plan to lease one of those puppies when I acquire a practice in the very near future

I'm betting his weekend cabin costs as much as my house.

The TL is a fine car I would have no regrets about buying it! Hell if the 12 MMC comes witha Type-S and some cleaning up of the beak I may be back in a TL. After 3 days in the M37 I love the car, but do miss the seats of the Acura and the stick in the corners of the SH-AWD. The Acura build quality seems better than the M37. Don't get me wrong the M is built well, some how the Acura just fell rock solid tight. We all make impulse car buys, hell I owned a 2007 Camry Hybrid for 5 months when gas was over $4! (Did I just admit that )

Well...I don't know much about US tax law but in Canadian TAx law you could "rollover" your TL into your corp. It is quite simple actually and I do it all time for health care specialists (I work in an Quebec accounting firm and we have a great deal of health care specialists...) and other professionnals when it is appropriate.

Canadian tax law limits the amounts deductible and include a taxable benefit for the user of the car so our law is much stricter than US law in this regard.

So Docboy, check with a good US tax lawyer or accountant to see the tax implications of selling your car to your corp or maybe getting some kind of reimbursment for the work mileage...

Sorry for the Off topic reply, I just have to reply when it comes to tax matters...

NAh it was educating on how to manage the throttle to get better MPG which I now apply to my current cars to get decent MPG until I get the urge to punch it

I used to get 36MPG easily in the Hybrid in the same driving I was getton 20.7 in the TL AWD, but of course the TL was way fun to drive. I twas cool driving on battery the car made no noise. And since the AC was electric the car was like an ice box within 30 seconds of turning the car on. While Toyota quality has slid a long way they really do have awesome hybrid technology.

Hey Pete, did I miss the link to the daytime pics? I noticed one in your profile pic and I'm eager to see more. Not too fond of the Oyster interior - never liked that color myself - but the small pic of the graphite exterior you have in your profile pic looks awesome.

Whoops - just found your pics thread in Car Talk.

Are you planning on picking up a separate set of winter tires + rims?

Yeah, I'll definately get some snow tires for the winter. It'll be more than adequate for where I live. AWD is really unnecessary if you live in a big city with good snow removal.

Hey can you ask your friends exactly how they're doing this? Like I said in an earlier post, as a physician its not easy to write off a car lease to your practice. When I've asked other practices how they do this, folks get really silent. Our accountant says that physicians do it, but you are taking a risk. If you are ever audited you will have to document that the car is used for business purposes. This doesn't include commuting to and from the office. As a physician, unless you're making house calls or traveling a lot between offices you're not using your car for a heck of a lot.

PM me if you get any more info. I would love ANY tips to help lower my taxable income.

Don't get me wrong the M is built well, some how the Acura just fell rock solid tight. We all make impulse car buys, hell I owned a 2007 Camry Hybrid for 5 months when gas was over $4! (Did I just admit that )
Keith, I should have clarified that it would made better financial sense for me to lease the TL when I have formed my own corporation/practice (like what Pete did with his BMW). I totally agree with you, the 4G TL is one tightly built and well engineered car.

Hindset (minus the impulse of course) is always 20/20

Interesting thing on reliability. Current R&T long term test car report. Acura 4G & BMW M-3 both pretty much the same age & mileage. Issues or problems, 0 on both.

In fact almost all the long term cars including a high millage Ford F-150 pickup have had 0 problems.

Well, cars nowdays are extremely well-built and well-engineered...pretty much across all model lines. This isn't the 80's or the early 90's where you can laugh at a Hyundai and bet it wouldn't last 1 week out of the showroom. I have no doubt that even the cheapest new car today would last for decades with proper care and maintenance.

Agree - It kind of takes the steam out of the "I chose reliability in buying an Acura instead of a first tier brand" statement.

It also generally mirrors my own personal experience with Acura & BMW; the main difference being my truck. Its a 12 year old Ranger 4X4 which so far, outside of normal wear items, has only required a new 5spd shift knob.

Car Manufacturers should reverse-engineer your truck so every car makers will have bulletproof reliability...

Then, repair shops won't like that but there's always someone unhappy about everything in life!

+1! I own a business and have never taken advantage of this. It's dangerous for me to be thinking about it, though... I can take any new information as an excuse to go buy a new car! I like that Bimmer... good choice, Pete!

What an equitable tax system. Flat tax anyone?

Anyway, the 550i looks great.

The new M looks almost bland in standard form and SUPER awesome with the Sport models.

Stunning in silver as well. Great choice.
