Good-Bye TL SH-AWD..

Congrats PetesTL! I drove the 550i at the BMW Driving Event. Didn't get a chance to drive the 535i - how is the difference between the 2 engines (night and day?)

Well the 550i has a 400hp/450 lb-ft twin turbo V8. All that torque peaks at around 1750 rpm so it's a big rush! According to BMW test numbers (which are usually conservative), 0-60 is around 4.4sec. I haven't really pushed my car because I'm still breaking it in. But this engine is a BEAST. You can Easily find yourself going into triple digits without even knowing it. And it does so very quietly and without drama....kinda like being in Lear Jet! It's easily a night-and-day difference from my TL and even the 535i. I can't even imagine what this car is capable of once the engine breaks in.
I had posted some photos earlier in the day but it got moved to Car Talk.

Here's some Night time shots!:
--> Love those rear LED brake lights!
--> Cool illuminated door sills!
--> Love those red ambient lighting! (although some guys don't like red)
--> This car has LED's everywhere!.....even the door handles! very cool!
--> Bi-Xenon's w/daytime LED "Angel Eyes"

Most people (incl. myself) who decide to get into these pricey German luxury cars know it's far better to lease than to own. I get free scheduled maintanance for 3 years. It's also titled to my business name, so it's written off for tax purposes.

Pete,
I'm not a big poster but I do read most of these threads. I've always enjoyed and trusted your posts. Thanks for all your insight and good luck with the BMW...it's an amazing car!

OMG, there's so much tech in this car it's overwhelming at times. (and I thought the TL was tech crazy!) The I-Drive is vastly improved from the previous generation...more intuitive, less menu searching. The system hard drive is huge.....there's a whole owners manual in there!....with video! Not only can you store songs into the media server, but documents, photos, video, etc. (There's a USB port in the glove box for doing this). The huge 10" NAV screen is awesome.....extreme hi-res and doesn't even remotely wash out in direct sunlight. Ipod integration is awesome as well.....you can dump everything, including music videos, into the media server!! I love the HUD.....not only is your speed shown (in holographic form) in the windhsield but NAV info. as well so you don't have to take your eyes off the road,

My father in law does the same thing - he leases his ls460 awd, and he even goes over on his mileage by about 20k total for 3 years. It's all one massive tax deduction for him since all he does is drive to his clients (accountant).

Sigh....as a physician we can only deduct a small percentage of a car lease which doesn't make it worth it. Otherwise I'd be joining you in a couple of years. Did you happen to look at other competitors (E Class, Audi S6, Jaguar XF?)

The HUD alone is making me cabin tech jealous.

Being a dentist, I plan on leasing through the business/corporation a SUV when I buy a practice in the very near future. Many of my dental friends do the same (ie. MDX, GX), and is a thorough enjoyable perk of business ownership. However, as an employee, the amount we can deduct is minimal (ie. business miles).

Olu, just wondering if you are an employee, or have your corporation/business identity (ie. family practice)?

Agreed, there always has to be a killjoy out there, to rain on your parade. Very nice pick-up. Okay I will be the killjoy, you should have purchased the M5.

Got that right. As nice as the RL is,, the TL is almost as good and in some cases are better, (ie no AWD in RL), and the TL is significantly cheaper. Why would anyone buy the RL.

You know, when I was at my dealer the other day looking at the 550i, there was a '09 M5 and a 2010 M3 in the lot. Yes, the E60 M5 has a bit more power than my 550i (esp. at the top end) but my F10 550i has a ton more creature comforts and technology, far more comfortable ride quality and refinement, and I would even say better overall handling. The 2010 M3 had a sticker price almost exactly the same as my 550i. I was tempted for a moment but the M3 was just too cramped and too harsh for my needs. My 550i rides like an absolute DREAM, no matter what condition the pavement.......easily the BEST riding/handling car I have ever driven!!

Congrats on the purchase! The interior is super cool, especially the LEDs. Please slap on some nice BBS wheels (forged) and take more pictures. Thanks

Pete, enjoy your new BMW. I have test driven one recently and there is no comparison in driving dynamics. Once a person drives the new 550i's, its like being addicted to drugs. You get hooked.

My TL had around 17K miles on it when it was traded-in.

The current market value on the '09 TL SH-AWD is around $29K-30K. It doesn't help that there's a huge rebate on new TL's right now which hurts its resale value somewhat. Being that I am a long-time customer, my dealer added another $3K to the TL (in addition to another $2K off the 550i), so my TL's trade-in value was $33,200.

Funny I am negotiating a 2011 M37 and I can confirm what Pete is saying. I was offered $28,500 for my TL SH-AWD with 19K miles on it, but got them up to 30,500 so far. I did check out the BMW 550i that Pete got, beutiful car, way out of my league, did drive a lowly 328i, got to love the BMW ride!

not to even sound bias. But I test drove the new TL and worked for Acura. The quality in the RL is far more superior than the TL. Even comparing my 2005 RL to a 2009 TL.

WOW, I'm not doubting you, byt my 09 AWD with 19K miles is rock solid, tight car, built like a tank, not a squeak or rattle and the laether looks almost new. If the RL is better than that then Acura surely has sadly missed great opportunities with that car.
