First oil change -- it's been 1 year but MID says 50%
Hi,
In general, I plan to have our 2014 TL serviced when the MID says it's time. However, what if the MID says that our oil life is still 50%, but the car has been driven for a year? I believe the owner's manual says to change the oil at 1 year, if the MID does not suggest it sooner. On the other hand, I have also heard that the factory oil has special additives and that we should not change it too soon.
So, should I have the factory oil changed at 1 year? Or, should I wait until the MID oil life indicator gets lower than 50%? If the latter, how much longer should I wait?
In the future, I guess the solution it to drive our car more!
Thanks,
Gregg

I was in a similar situation as you. IIRC, I had around 6k Kms when I was going to store my car, regardless I changed it before storage.
It is true that the original oil has special additives, however your car is already broken in by the mileage stated and you should change it.

If it's a full synthetic it's not a problem. Just wait for the reminder.
If it's conventional oil it will absorb moisture but, that will evaporate once the motor is hot. Just look at the oil, if its clear it's still good. If it's dark replace it.
I would be more concern with the Main seals and seals in general drying up than the oil.
If you are only doing 5500k miles a year then just take your car for a minimum of half hour freeway drive to lubricate the seals once a month. You want to get the engine nice and hot. AC seals need lubing too so, turn on AC or defroster.

OK, thanks for the advice. It sounds like most everyone agrees that I should change the oil, even though the MID is at 50%.
By the way, I was not trying to save money by delaying the oil change. I just did not want to change out the factory oil sooner than I was supposed to.
Thanks,
Gregg

Yup change it as others have said. I don't know why the MID doesn't have a clock to calculate that it needs to be changed due to time. The other annoying thing about the MID and service schedule is when it asks you to just change just the oil and not the filter...so stupid.

It's a good routine to change your oil every 12 months if you have not achieved 0% on the MID. This year I'm only trending to put 4,400 miles on my TL so I'll be changing it on Christmas Eve of this year since that is my holiday season tradition! I'm currently using Mobil 1 0W20 full synthetic with a Honda A01 filter. Next round I'll be using another Honda filter, however I now have a stash of Royal Purple 0W20 synthetic so I'll be using that for the next few years.

Conventional Oil needs to be changed 1x a year due to it's properties over time. Oil becomes acidic over time and slowly eats away at engine components. If you don't drive enough to change the oil 1x a year, you should switch to synthetic oil.
