Finally got my new TL!

Hi there. I've been a lurker for a while, but never bothered to create a login. Then on Apr 5, after I have secured a relatively rare 2012 TL SH-AWD 6MT, I finally signed up.

19 days later, as of yesterday, I finally took delivery of my new TL, black on black, with 1 mile on the odo. Rolled off the assembly on Apr 15, and arrived yesterday morning. 19 days of pure agony. It's like being a kid finding out you're going to Disney World, but you won't get to go for another 19 days. LOL

Well, I haven't done much with my TL yet, other than first thing this morning having it car bra'd with 3M Paint Protector film. Took a while to decide between that, Venture Shield, and Xpel. I've also ordered the trunk drawer, and other accessory knick knacks.

Anyway, since it is still a new car, I haven't really let that throttle open up all the way. The manual says 600 miles to break-in, but I typically do 1,500 miles. So we'll see. Can't wait to open it up on a nice weekend road trip.

So far, I'm loving my new ride. And I'm glad to join AZ!

Congrats on your new ride. Enjoy.

Speaking of agony of waiting. 19 days are nothing compared to my 6 months' wait.

I ordered my silver TL on Mar of 2011, and the car arrived finally in Sept.

Thanks!

I totally hear ya! And I'm really thankful for the pure luck with how I got into my 6MT. It all started with me realizing a 2010 CPO 6MT getting on a local inventory in March. I really wanted it, but the stealer wanted $36,000 for it (with 26K miles), and also wanted to rape me on my trade in.

Then I got curious about my AMEX auto purchasing program, and wanted to see how much I can get into a new one. I spec'ed out a 6MT, and two quotes came in slightly higher than $39,000. Dumb luck would have it that another dealer had ordered the 6MT back in December, and happen to arrive some time in April.

It was like a perfect alignment of the stars. I'm really glad things worked out nicely. But even if I had not been able to get the 6MT, I would've been willing to fly to Pohanka Acura and settle for a new 6AT AWD w/ Tech for $36,500 like mihink. =)

The only disappointments I had on the day of delivery were that once it got dark, I noticed a scratch on the NAV screen (it wasn't visible during the day), and when I got home, it errored with "Remove Keyless Remote From Slot," despite never having inserted the fob in the slot since I took delivery. And I had already turned on/off the car multiple times by then! Thanks to rjarin, I was able to fix it on the spot (https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...6#post12618306).

So the dealer was kind enough to let me go to the shop floor during the TQI and take pics of my new TL. =)

Congrats! Very nice in black. Don't baby it too much during break in. Opening the throttle up once in a while is perfectly fine and may actually prevent problems that some members are experiencing with excessive oil usage.

Congrats and welcome to the 6MT club. Nice color too.

If the Nav screen scratch bothers you, make sure you tell the dealer about it quickly. They should take care of it for you.

Good luck showing some restraint during break-in.

Congrats. Black on Black rules!!

Good thing you you have 47,996 miles left on your warranty to get the key fob error fixed.

Any futures mods planned? Window tint is a must.

Thanks! I've been working out my right arm and left leg for many, many years now. I don't foresee stopping anytime soon. And OMG! The tranny is buttery smooth! It's like cutting into a butter muffin! My Spec.B had really grabby clutch, and the TL's tranny is even smoother than my Eclipse GT, which I thought couldn't be beat! Lovin' it!

Once in a while I've actually opened up the throttle slightly, only up to 4500 rpm. Some idiot was tailgating me with his 328i last night, and I handily made him tiny on my rearview mirror. =)

I went back to McGrath Acura, and they will be replacing the NAV screen visor, once they get the part.

Actually, good thing I have 120,000 miles left. =) I got in touch with Bob Leab w/ Hyannis Honda and got the 8/100/0 Acura Care. Before I signed the dotted line, I went to a couple Honda dealers, and they got upset that this Bob was charging below cost. Fletcher Jones Honda wanted to earn my business by charging cost, until she saw Bob's quotes. She took down Bob's email address, and told me that I should just go with Bob. LOL

The fob issue seems easy to fix, per another AZer's tip. Black on black is starting to grow on me, especially when many people say it looks more refined. I'm not going to enjoy seeing every flaw or dirt more often, but it definitely is growing on me. =)

As far as future mods, I've already got my 3M PPF. Trunk drawer, trunk tray, all season mats are on order, but it seems on AZ accessories are considered mods. Definitely thinking about LED license plate lighting, and LED interior lighting to brighten things up, although I do like the soft cold lights in the 2012. I was going to replace the Michelin tires right away, but decided to wear it out, then put on winter tires, and buy a set of 19" with HPTs, but I've got to save some money first. And I'm definitely thinking about installing the roof spoiler that many people have gotten from here: https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-photograph-gallery-296/2012-rear-upper-wing-823090/

As for the interior, I want to get a mounting bracket so that my Nokia smartphone is within easy reach. Bracketron doesn't make one for the 4G TL, and I'm down to ProClip, PanaVise, and possibly Ram-Mount's X-Grip under the rear view mirror. Leaning towards the X-Grip, but first I got to find a long enough 2mm Nokia charger cable so that I can run behind the headliner, down the A-pillar, then to the ciggy plug. Unless someone can provide a method of doing hot wiring for the Nokia charger in a somewhat safe method.

As for tinting, I've never been a fan of it. I've seen so many cars after many years the tinting started to look horrible that I prefer no tinting. Plus, I live in Chicago. When the state of Illinois changed the tinting laws to allow front windows to be tinted for calendar year 2012, Chicago City Council changed its municipal code for fining front window tinting from $25 to something over $1,000. I think it's just Chicago's corrupt ways of getting more money from its citizens. So even if I want to tint, I'd never do just the rear windows. The imbalance makes the car look ghetto. LOL

No, I have not seen it. I wish I had known, as it is too late now since I've already ordered it from AcuraPartsWorld. I plan on installing it myself, so perhaps the fit will be better? Or is the poor fit unrelated to the install, but overall design? Please elaborate, as I may try to return it and get the hooks instead before I go through all the trouble of installing it. Thanks much!

stHalcyon, I've been thinking about the trunk drawer but am concerned that it may intrude too much on an already small trunk space. Would be interested to hear your opinons once you have yours installed.

On Friday, I took my friend's parents to ORD as their trip from France came to an end. Their two ginormous luggage fit perfectly side by side, and there appears to be much headroom for the drawer.

But now I've been second guessing about the drawer though. Do you, or does anybody else, have pics of it installed besides that small resolution pic shown on Acura's website?

The reason why I wanted that drawer was to reduce the risk of rattle noise in the cabin. I can put the torch, electronic tire pressure gauge, tread depth meter, extra non-locking lug nuts, wheel lock key and other heavier items in the drawer instead of the center console box or the glove box. Now I'm wondering the little functionality I gain is worth the loss of practicality in space.

It absolutely is not worth it, besides you have space to put those within the spare tire foam thing, including your non-locking nuts, which BTW you could also remove from the car and leave home. I have mine in the foam thing.

Good idea!

By the way, one thing I always have in the trunk of my car is a long combination windshield scraper and brush (opposite ends). I'm starting to dislike leaving it laying down, because the brush gets all bristled up from other occasional loads, and moving around in general. Any AZers have a simple DIY solution to keep such a brush in place?

The closest I have is to put the hook side of velcros onto the brush, and stick it up against the top felt side of the trunk liner, seeing how the TL's liner is felty, unlike my Spec.B. But that seems like I may end up with a higher failure rate. Thoughts?

The drawer will take up quite some space towards the top half of the already oddly-shaped trunk.

Luggages are ok because they can be lay flat, but big and square items will have problems making inside.

Yeah. Earlier tonight, I had my laptop backpack sitting upright in the trunk, and it appears that if I have that drawer installed, my upright laptop backpack won't be able to fit in. I think I'm leaning toward returning it, after looking at the pictures in the other thread. I seem to be every bit on the fence on this one. LOL

I used to travel every week for seven years as a consultant, so I loathe checking in luggage. I travel with a rollerbag that I carry-on, so that should fit the trunk + drawer just fine. It's the road trips with friends I'm worried about. But then, I don't make a habit of road tripping often. =)

And I'm already screwed with my skis and ski bag. The TL's rear seats don't fold down!! But I've since made my peace with it.

I hate the fact that the back seat can't be folded down too.

I just managed to fit 2 pairs of fat-tipped skis through the smallish ski-pass-through opening this past winter. It took me quite a while to figure out how to do it the very 1st time. It was a very tight fit indeed.

I'm with you on that fence! I appreciate the possibilities the trunk drawer provides (storage for my detailing sprays and towels, etc). I suppose the drawer can be removed if you need the extra space (the rails will remain though). It would be so much easier to see the install so that you can play around with the fit options....

Using the pass-through hole may work if I live near ski destinations, but in Chicago, not so much. Unless I want to do that, and then pack my ski gear once I get to the airport parking lot. I don't think I'll ever do that, considering I have never made it to the airport on time, despite my best intentions.

Yes, it is the possibilities that's keeping me on the fence. I'll sit on it when my package arrives tonight and see. I don't think it's going to take me 20 minutes like the other guy, since if I'm pulling the trigger, I'm going to paint over the enlarged hole's exposed metal area for sure. No point in risking early onset of rust.

stHalcyon, I would really appreciate hearing your review on the drawer if you wind up installing it. As far as a cross section view of the Crosstour wiper blade, my camera does have a macro lens if you still think a photo would help.?

Sure, I'll post a review of the drawer if I end up keeping it. I should have plenty of time to think it over, because some of the hardware parts to install the drawer is OOS at AcuraPartsWorld, and they haven't shipped them yet.

Yeah, it'd be great if you can take a cross section pic of the wiper. What I'm looking for is if the rubber part has extra fins to help it bend better, thus making a better wipe. Similar to this: http://boschautoparts.com/WiperBlade....aspx#features

You know how at the end of a wire, like a charge plug, or earphone cable, etc, there's that weird sleeve that when looked at the cross section has fins? That's supposed to help the object bend better in a curving method instead of a straight 75 degree bend. Just trying to see if the Honda Crosstour wipers are better designed, or simply has the aerodynamic spoilers only. But take your time, because I don't need to waste a perfectly good OEM wiper blade on my TL just yet.

Well, tonight, my hopes of taking pictures for a DIY process of installing the drawer comes to an uneventful end. Apparently finding 3, 6 and 10 mm drillbits (or any metric drill bit) is near impossible! The hardest part was the rivet nut tool. I finally gave up, and I'm just going to take it up the bung hole and let the stealership financially rape me in the installation fee. I think they want 2 hours worth of the mechanic's time. =(
