I use to think the same because to me it made sense, but according to all the pro's in car the modding business I've spoken to, they've all said the same thing along these lines "more air flow more fuel"; from Richie at RV6, Dan at CT-E, and many others. If they're wrong though I gladly appreciate the extra mpg!

2012 SH-AWD after break in gave me 20-21 city/hwy combo. Moved recently from Irvine (SoCal) and mileage went to 22.5 with slightly more hwy. Noticed an occasional 23-25 and then traced it to the gas. Lower in winter by 1-2 MPG, lower in summer with air by 1-2 MPG, so it evens out. Winter gas in SoCal is a different blend. When I stopped getting gas in Irvine (Shell or Chevron) gas went up 2 MPG. Get my gas in Mission Viejo now.

Ah, the spring/winter mix difference. I've heard this too, but does anyone know what that diff is? I wonder if it's the % ethanol. I was jealous of South Dakota when travelling there this summer. They offered both ethanol-free and 10% ethanol gas. Missouri requires all grades to have 10% ethanol. That crap causes nothing but trouble with lawnmowers and other small engines. I'm sure our engines handle 10% ethanol just fine since it says in the owner's manual, but wondering if it runs better without it and with better mileage to boot.

Last year the EPA approved 15% ethanol blends. I am hoping these do not come to pumps near me. the 10% already causes problems and I haven't found a single station near me yet that doesn't have 10% all the time. Ethanol is not as energy dense, and its harder on parts. Its a shame they use it at all. Not to mention, the corn crops use a lot of resources, and converting the corn to ethanol is worse for the environment than the benefit of having it our fuel. Its a big waste of money for all parties involved except those who grow corn and the ethanol producers and the gas companies that get paid to use it. Sorry about the political rant everyone.

Anyway, I have the same commute every day and we use my wife's car for other trips. I calculate my MPG at each fill up and I have never noticed a difference between summer and winter blends as far as MPG. Of course, it could be because I use the A/C in the summer.

My 2012 TL SH-AWD got as high as 31 mpg on the highway. With 4 adults, full trunk of luggage, I saw 27-28mpg on my last trip to Dallas.

This is with AC on, driving about 70-80.

In the city, I get around 21-22 with mix driving. Car does good for AWD and a V6. I am pretty happy.

Had a 5 hour, nearly 300 mile trip yesterday with the A/C on, one passanger, some luggage, plenty of slowing down from my 70-75 cruising speed due to multiple highway construction sites and still averaged 28.3mpg. I'm very happy, with the result.

Ethanol has a higher octane rating, but less energy per gallon, which negatively impacts gas mileage. Diesel has more energy per gallon, which is why diesel engine cars get better gas mileage... Same with why E85 delivers worse fuel economy than E10, which delivers worse fuel economy than good ol' straight gasoline.
