Disable automatic shift from 1st to 2nd?

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the automatic shift from 1st to 2nd in the 2012 TL when you're in Sequential Shift mode? I have a 2012 SH-AWD TL base which I love, however it would be even more fun to choose when to shift from 1st to 2nd when driving with the paddle shifters, rather than having it done automatically. Thanks.

Yea - but with the 2012 it will will shift to 2nd for you.

I have to say I had a 2012 loaner for a week or so and that was the most annoying part of the car - felt good to get back to my 6MT.

I'm pretty sure when I had my 5AT '07 TL-S - it wouldn't autoshift even if you hit redline - but it's been a while and I may be mistaken.

Starting in 2nd

Basically, I was just trying to kill some time. I'm sure we all do that from time to time. I decided to kill time by reading, others of you might do other things. The TL has some many features that I thought I would explore the manuals just to see if there was stuff I did not know about. I have found a few. For instance, I did not know when the car is fully stopped and in S mode, you can pull the + paddle twice and when you take off, it takes off is second gear, rather than first in snow or ice. Not earth shattering, in the least. Really, how necessary is that with VSA? But it is something I did not know if I had not read the manual.

Just for info, this statement is for an '11 and probably earlier models with 5 speed. The '12s have 6 speed autos, so I don't know if the "double" pull on the paddle will work. Try it and see.

My 3G has the same behavior as the 2012. Here have been my observations from the almost 6 years of driving the car:

1. 0-60 performance is almost always the best in D- mashing the gas. If you floor the gas the tranny holds gear until near redline with no premature 1-2 shift. I have learned to let the auto stay in D.

2. I can use L to hold 1st gear but I only did this once to see if that works.

3. I find the manual shift to be most useful on mountain/curvy roads when I'm driving in gears 2 or higher anyway. It's also nice in the snow for starting in 2.

4. Use Redline Type-F ATF and you'll be amazed about the crispness of shifts and your tranny won't wear as much- less metallic crap on the drain plug.

3G 2007-2008 Base and Type S autos have full control over all 5 gears. All other years the computer takes over the shift from 1st to 2nd unless you put it into L. I'm pretty sure that all 4G models lock out the 1st to 2nd shift as well. I had a 2012 TL loaner and it had 1st to 2nd locked out.

I had a 2G 2003 TL also and 1st to 2nd was locked out as well in manual mode. I'm guessing that only the 2007-2008 TL's had the unlocked 1st to 2nd manual mode shift.

Vshengr you are wrong Sir. 2009 2011 TL gives the driver full control over 1st to 2nd. I would NOT buy a 6MT although it would be great, Chicago stop go is no fun, owned all MTs in past,no more. I use the Sport shift paddles whenever i can on my AWD 2011 and love it. In addition i would NOT want a 2012 primarily due to that 1st to 2nd shift is taken away. My Wife has a 6AT MDX and i hate the auto 1st to 2nd since what makes it even worse it shifts at a different rev every time. Just my 2 cents.
