Directions on installing roof spoiler

I have searched the forum and can't find anything on this. I received my roof spoiler from oembmwshop on eBay this week and want to install it today because there is no rain expected this week.

The package did not include any directions for installing and it didn't include the glue.

Two questions:

  1. Is the glue needed? If so, will a silicone glue of some kind work? Any direction on what to buy here is appreciated.
  2. Does anyone have a PDF of the installation instructions? I can make some assumptions, but want to make sure I get it right the first time.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I just recently installed (and subsequently uninstalled) my roof spoiler.

I noticed the right side lifting up so I wanted I start over.

Here is what I would recommend. Do not use the glue. It did absolutely nothing and was an absolute pain to remove from my glass. Most of the glue I applied never even adhered to the glass and just stuck to the spoiler itself.

The tape included with the spoiler is weak. I'm either purchasing some 3M moulding tape or I may even wait and order 3M vhb tape.

I peeled all the existing tape off and scraped off all of the glue residue from the spoiler. I'm planning on adding 3 strips of tape instead of the two when I reapply it. I would suggest doing the same because the tape it shipped with was just not strong enough.

Also, I think it was too cold when I applied it (about 50 degrees) so I'm planning on heating the garage until the ambient temperature is at least 70 degrees.

This is just my experience and ymmv, but I wanted to share my experience.

I purchased mine from the same eBay seller you did.

Good luck.

Hogan, I have 2 layers of the 3M two sided tape. My roof spoiler has been on for about 3 years-never had a problem with it!

What do you mean by two layers? Did you use the glue?

I just bought some aquarium (silicone glue) at home depot and it says it adheres to rubber and glass.

I'm about to do it, so hopefully it will work. I'm not the best at this stuff, so we'll see how it goes.

Hogan, sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. I just put 2 layers of the 3M tape on top of each other and did not use any glue. I'm sure what you did will work fine!

The roof spoiler I got off ebay did not come with any glue. It came with some type of chemical to prepare the glass for the tape. Once I put the chemical on and let it dry, the tape stuck the wing down very tight. Its been on for 8 months, and it still very snug on the rear glass. It would be be very hard to take if off. That chemical helps the tape stick better on the glass.

I also got mine from ebay a few months ago..
I used the glue it came with and also the 2 strips on the top and bottom of tape that was supplied on the spoiler itself worked perfectly for me..
Its been about 4-5 months now and nothing wrong with mine..came with directions also

Just my two cents, but don't you think the roof spoiler looks a little ghetto on the 4G's?

Try 3M VHB (very high bond). It is much stronger than the 3M tape you'd typically find in stores. The spoiler should not come off with that tape.

Search on YouTube for it to see demos of its strength.

One thing to note: It's not cheap! Close to $40 a roll.

A couple cheaper options if you don't need a large roll

Does the spoiler come with VHB tape since its red, and should I put silicone in the middle of the 2 tapes for a better hold? Thanks.

A tube of Silicone sealant/glue is provided, which many have used. I opted to just use the tape and it appears to be holding up pretty well.

I used the silicone that came with the spoiler. I applied it inbetween the strips of tape and it seemed to hold very well.

I actually did not use the silicone that came with the spoiler. I did add another strip of 3M tape for added strength. Did the exact same thing with the one I put on the Maxiam and no problems at all for either vehicle.

Most important thing you should do when installing is wait for warm temps/weather. I did this in winter last year with 3M Trim tape and it still started to come off. I waited until spring to try again. It's been perfect since.

I installed mine with the temps right around freezing over a year ago and have had no problems. I may have been lucky, but just offering another perspective.

Also make sure you start with a very clean surface. That is pretty critical.

As Treblig said - clean the surface well before installing with isopropyl alcohol.

I did mine in the winter - but waited for a warmer day and heated up my garage with a torpedo heater for a couple of hours.
