Cold...

Yes, miss J engine started at -22oC this morning after sitting out there in the freezing cold overnight (-7.6°F with the wind factor it was more like -30oC or -22°F). No funny noises either. Except a bit of noise for 3-4 seconds coming from what I think is the pulleys of the drive belt tensioner. I do remember looking at them during the summer and noticed rust on them.

She no longer has the OEM battery but an after market Motomaster with 860 cold crank amps. I think the OEM is 640amps?

Has anyone attempted to start their TL at even lower temperatures from dead cold?

I have but it was only once since the temps dipped. I'd suggest getting a block heater to save your motor.

I've done -10 F or so.

Right now with temps in the low 20s in the morning, there is a bit of a noise when it first cranks, but it immediately goes away.

That is pretty damn scary. I'm glad I live in SoCal where cold weather is 55F. Best of luck this winter season!

OP....I know the feeling of being in a cold climate. BTW...wind chill only affect human/animals and not things like cars.

AntSauce....Any chance I could crash in your basement?

As funny as this might sound, every house I've lived in didn't have a basement. As a matter of fact, I don't know anyone that lives in L.A. that has a basement (although I'm sure somebody might have one). From what I've heard, when housing development happened in the city (I literally grew up in L.A....5 miles from Staples Center to give you an idea), way back in the day, they were such in a hurry to develop the city, that they built houses as fast as possible, without basements.

I do have a bit of attic space, a 2 car garage, and a huge backyard you can camp in, though. LOL.

Synthetic engine oil is best suited to be used under this kind of low temperatures.

I had the joy of starting my TL at -29C and snow after sitting in the parking lot for close to 9 hours last week. It started up no problem and thanks to the remote starter, ran it for about 10 minutes before get going. The shocks and tires felt sooooo stiff and rough. Everything finally warmed up to comfortable level when I got home half an hour later.

My mom's side of the family has been here since as far back as the 1600s and my dad's side got here fairly recently in the 1850s... I just wore shorts and a t-shirt outside to walk my dog with only a slight amount of shivering. I can handle it haha.

I made a run to the local dealer today and picked up a block heater and a jar of engine coolant. A couple of quick notes about the install. First of all don't bother emptying the radiator. It will spill an entire jar (~3.7L) as soon as you remove the bolt on the front of the engine, a bit to the right of the front cat. Easy to refill from the radiator and run the engine after with the cap loosely installed to get the bubbles out. Second note, no need to remove the front bumper cover either as the installation instructions I found on the net say you should. You can run the cable under the intake inlet as long as you remove that inlet. Careful with the clips that hold that down, they pop and disappear in the engine bay ! Sorry, no pictures... to cold to think

I'll see tomorrow morning if it makes any difference now that I installed it. The block heater says 400W on it. Thats a bit low, I think.

Mine makes a funny squeal noise as well on cold starts (0c or colder). Sounds like a bad pulley. Once it's warmed up the squeal stops on start-ups. Going to the dealership on the 23. Plug your vehicle in any chance you get. I do with all of mine when parked at work. Cold starts are hard on engines.

The coldest I have started my TL at so far has been at -10F or so. It always makes a small high pitched whine/rev sound when the starter disengages below about 5F. Most cars I've had have done that in the cold.

When I was working in Wisconsin I leased an accord. That always started even at -35F. Worst day there we had a high of -13F.

It did make a difference starting it after 2 hours plugged in the block heater, in the morning. I wouldn't leave it over night because it is an expense on the hydro bill, even at 400w. I don't think that it has a thermostat built in.

The RPMs didn't go to 1800-1900 as the day before, more like 1200 after 2 hours of the block heater plugged in at around -20oC this morning. So far so good. Probably the best investment I made for winter driving, other than the weather tech mats that are great for winter too.

PS. the "windchill" reference is about me getting out of bed and out the door at that temperature to plug in the block heater. That is a bit of a hassle, but good thing I found other uses for the outdoor Christmas lights timer too

PS2. you will need a 19mm to remove the OEM plug on the block and a 22mm to tighten the block heater at around 50lb torque. BTW, try not to drive away with the cord still attached to the outlet - lol

Damn. Coldest starts I had were around 15F. Only "issue" was some slight noise from the engine for the first 5 seconds or so, but that went away every single time. I don't budge the car until at-least the first 3 or so ticks on the temp guage though. (Mostly cause my ass is too frozen to do anything)

Kansas 37oF?? ... thats lile BBQ weather up here in some parts of Canada.

When it gets to crazy cold -13oF you can feel the grease is frozen stiff in the CV joints !!! Yet, the 4th Gen TL drives like there is nothing wrong with that picture.

Some cold weather testing by Acura. I am sure you have all seen this by now, but worth watching again. Good informative video, but a bit sensationalized. Scientific testing has to do with material molecular structure and properties testing, not doing doughnuts on snow.

I beat my previous record lol. -32oC (or -25.6oF).

With a little over 120k km (~74k miles) she started just fine with no hesitation. But, with a Motomaster Eliminator Ultra AMG aftermarket battery. It is rated at 780 cold crank amps at zero degrees Celsius and 650 at -18 Celsius. It took a while to warm up. Only when I started moving did the engine fully warm up, at idle it barely got any warm, starting at around 1900 RPMs and dropping slowly to 1200in about 15 min. I wonder if I can beat that record this winter... its getting ridiculous cold up here in Canada this winter!

^^ I know the feeling....we are shattering records as well as far as continuous cold temps and our power bill will surely reflect the situation It appears that we have a mild spell on Monday with temperatures in the +8 to +10 range followed by another major cold spell for Tue/Wed and Thu but after that, it appears we are on our way to more "near" or "above normal" temps for the next week to week

Just make sure you get all the salt off before you let the car get above freezing. That's what causes the salt to rust.

It hit -51C (-59F) a couple of days ago.

It started fine but then my backup camera turned all white and it swtiched back to my home screen. I continued driving and I lost all my gauges and turn signals.
When i stopped and started the car it started but died immediately, I ended up having to tow the car in and its been at Acura since new years.

They swapped a new battery in and replaced some blown fuses but every time they put it in reverse a bunch of fuses blow...

So apparently this was too cold for the old TL... Hopefully they fix it today, I'm sick of bumming rides lol.

Angie loves this weather. Doesn't miss a beat and charged thru all our insane drifting this morning. I don't even have the winter tires on.

No loaner car?? That's crazy. I ALWAYS get a loaner if I'm leaving it for anything over a day on warranty issues.

My car cranked a bit this morning with -9º F....it's actually been making a loud screech for about 10 seconds the past month or so (between 25-45º). Anyone have an idea about what's causing it? It sounds like a screech and whine at the same time, hard to explain.

Is anyone else getting low tire pressure warnings when the temp drops? Every time it goes below 10 degrees F, my tire warning light comes on and it tells me they are all at 26 or 27 PSI, when I test, they are really around 30. When it warms back up, the warning goes away and the car says they are at 30 or 31, and my gauge says they are at 34. I'm tempted to inflate them a little to mitigate the warning, but I generally run them all at 43.

Your actually supposed to put more air into the tires in the winter because the cold will reduce your tire pressure. The warning goes off because the tires heat up as you drive.

I would put some more air in them.
