4G Top Speed...

For lack of readily available safely cop-free open freeway and low miles on my new 4G....I haven't been brave enough to test the top end speed of my new 4G SH-AWD Tech yet (got it up to 90mph yesterday on busy freeway in Houston)... but has anyone else?

Just off the top of my head I'm thinking it could theoretically hit 130 easily considering when I had a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T with sport suspension and 17 inch wheels that I got up to 125mph easily on an open freeway without feeling like I was going to immediately die...

Waiting for the "Check users manual page X,XXX,XXX for Acura governed top speed..." response...

governed at 128mph, the speedo will read a little over 130mph but that's not correct.

So only the base TL 04-08 not Type-s Go over 150. Why would the TL-S, not be able to go over 130?

There are so many bad roads in NYC, the Belt actually feels quite smooth by comparison lol. And there's a niiiiiiiice stretch of about two exits, between Knapp St. and Coney Island Avenue where there's no shoulder for the cops to hide. I just couldn't resist =)

I have sustained 120mph at slightly less than @5K rpm. 22mpg was fuel economic. how is TL rpm and fuel economy at those speeds. whether it is suitable for long stretch.

It used to be it had to do with only the tires speed rating that the vehicle came with from the factory. The manufacturer decided how fast they thought each specific model should be governed to and had tires to match that. But my friend who works for an insurance co said now it's becoming a liability for auto manufacturers to have the speed limiters set really high. He wasn't sure how it worked, but it costs them more to have the top speed be 155, rather than 128. So even though my SH-AWD w/ 19" HPT's comes with tires rated for 155+ mph, Honda/Acura didn't want the car going over 128. This also gives a better safety score when an insurance company quotes a price for you. So Honda/Acura wants to play it safe, save money, and keep the insurance companies and their own lawyers happy. And the German manufacturers know that they have roads where it's legal to drive 155+mph so they as a group decided that was a good top speed for their cars.

So yeah iforyou, if we raced open ended for a bunch of miles you would take me.. eventually.

No, it's related to the RL Tranny components (at least that's the theory).

TL-S 6MT does ~150-ish before the governor.

so when I order my 2010 4G 6MT - I need to order the optional RL tranny/rear end cooler - to get the speed limiter delete.

The 3G TL Type S will do 155mph. It's only the 4G that is gov limited to 128MPH.

Many autos and nearly all motorcycles now have governors to limit top speeds. Mostly due to tire limitations based on ratings and for safety ratings. Motorcycles started when the Hayabusa and super blackbird broke 200mph. They self imposed a 186 mph limit before governments stepped in.
On my new gsxr 1000 we just installed a small accessory that overrides the limiter. Not to exceed 200mph, but to make the bike faster in the lower gears.

BTW, 2002 Honda Accord EX-V6 had a limiter, so Honda/Acura has been doing this for quite some time.

the governer is built into the ECU, there's a way to over-ride it using some tools and products, but I wouldn't advise it since you shouldn't be going that fast. The 3G tl (besides the auto Type-S) can reach 155 before the limiter kicks in. Newer acura's are limited to 130-135 for saftey reasons and as well for lower insurance rates as posted above.

Yes limiters where set to 155MPG in old 2g Type S also.... I have never driven any customer or dealership cars this fast, but my own cars have known to see limiters.

My car had a 130MPH speed limiter, GIAC chip removed it... I've had it to 168MPH on GPS - 175 on the speedo. I don't get past 140 often.

Most bikes now are either gear limited or ECU limited also. I have no death wish to see what my RC51 will do, I've had it at 165 once and thats enough.

You could put the car up in the air and see what its speed limiter is, I know that 155 is all she will do in a 2nd gen TL-S because I ran it up that far on the lift listening to a weird high speed tranny noise.

Not that I ever go 150mph, but it alway made me feel good knowing my 05 TL could reach that speed but now my 07 Type S can not. I was wondering why the 07 Type S was cheaper to insure than my 05 and I guess now I know. Why do they give us W rated tires then? LOL

I used to own a 99 Oldsmobile Alero. I remember taking in on a HW I could finally open her up to. I was so pissed when the fuel cut off at 105mph and felt cheated.

Oh well, I guess if you really wanna drive fast, stick with Infiniti or BMW...

For top speed, I take my S2000 out, not my TL SH-AWD.

269 km/h = 167 mph.

My adrenaline is just flying after watching that clip. Holy shnike, that's just too much fun, but scary in that small of a car for my tastes. I recently hit 120mph in my TL and it was extremely smooth and stable.

Yeah, me too... heart is pumping!!!

Good thread so far peeps! I'm a little tired of seeing all the "just drove a 4G and I don't know" and "I hate the 4G" threads...

I hear ya lonestar, the funny thing is more than 50% of those haters will be driving the TL sooner or later. Probably next year when the manual transmission comes out and a few mods are made by Acura.

Yes! MODS! Let's hear about some mods! This is an enthusiast forum, not a potential owner's forum!!!...

If we can get more mod threads on here, we will build momentum, more easily persuade potential buyers and haters, and generally have more fun!...

Please do a search on 09 TL mods, as we've talked about a bunch of them already. The grill, rims, body kits, splash guards, painting, tints, trunk trays, nav screen hacks, etc...

It keeps its thumbs outside the wheel or else it loses them in a crash (again).

IIRC the guy who posted the film is Spanish, he is running in daylight, the other cars move over quickly on his flash, the road signs look to be blue & the tractor trailer he passes looks to have euro guards on it.

Not sure about Spain but you can go fast on the Autostrada, been there, done that, have the tee shirt.

For whatever it's worth, you can hit the limiter at VIR on both the front straight and the back straight, and you'll be amazed at the car's attitude coming out of Oak Tree. The car does very nicely for the huge boat that it is.

Brakes are a little weak for extended performance driving of this variety, however, IMHO. If you do a couple of laps at 10/10, you're going to slow down for the succeeding laps.

If you have 1/2 a brain, anyway.

:-)

Honda Legends (it is our RL) sold in Europe (and as ours are only automatic) are limited to 155 mph (250 km/h)

I heard somewhere that the TL SH-AWD 6MT should be limited to 155 as well.

2G TL Type S were governed to 150 (according to C&D)

Based on available power and size of the car, the 4G TL with no governon in place, should be capable of hitting 165-170 mph.

True. Even my 03 Accord V6 auto is limited to 135mph. In reality, that is plenty fast!
