4G TL 6MT owners, are you happy?

Hello all,
I am a new member, and currently drive a 2004 Acura TSX 6MT stock, and have driven it since 2003. It's been a great car, relatively few issues besides burning oil since about 70k miles and there's 140k miles on it now. I'm looking for a little more power, I have enjoyed the reliability of my car and don't want to spend money on a replacement that has lots of issues. So my question to the 4G TL 6MT owners is are you happy with your car and how many have had issues? I've seen there seem to be some oil consumption issues, which I have had with my car too. We bought a 2009 TL shawd 5at a couple years ago but sold it, couldn't drive an automatic, and a suspension issue made my wife nauseous. Thanks in advance for any input! -Matt

I have an '11 SH-AWD 6MT with around 55k miles. It's been reliable and I have had no issues except for oil consumption.

From another thread:

"With 1,484 miles on the new short block, I've added 3/4 of a QT. I check it every two weeks and top it off if not at the full line. The good news is that at the last check I did not have to add oil. Right at the full mark like I left it 463 miles ago. A good sign, yet I can't explain it.
A spirited drive home tonight reminded me why I sought this car......damn... "

At 64,067 miles, new short block and clutch.
I like to drive. This car likes to be driven.
Very, very happy.

I am at about 35K on mine and love it more than the day I got it. Uses maybe 1/2 to a quart of oil every 4-5K miles, not enough to get riled up about, but I wish it didn't use any. That's it.

What the others have said is true - I look forward to driving my car every day. When things are really aligned -- right music, right road, little traffic -- it's near magic.

2011 62,500mi love it
Change propeller drive shaft (warranty)

The oil issue everyone talk of I have not been paying so much attention. I'm guessing a half a quart every 4,000mi I think? I been going by the MI thing before this yr but otherwise I LOVE MY CAR.

I went and drove one today, unfortunately it had some major issues, check shawd system, check hill start assist system, and one other I can't remember. Got into second gear and it would suddenly lose power and lurch, then power would resume. Drove it a block and told the salesman I wouldn't be buying it from the problems. He understood, unfortunately I flew from Boise to Seattle to see it, but wasn't told there was any problems beforehand. DOH! Live and learn, unfortunately it shook my confidence in looking for any other ones...
Thanks for the replies so far! -Matt

Layman's terms, because I'm no engineer: blow by, caused by some combination of the piston rings and cylinder wall material. Oil "blows by" and is consumed in the combustion reaction. Again, that's my limited understanding. I just own the J37A4 and am no expert. The SME's here will correct me shortly, which is a good thing.

The root cause was addressed by discontinuing the motor. Only treating the symptom now I'm afraid. New short block for me at 64,067 miles. It consumes oil as well and I'm monitoring and adding.

I'm OK with it. Got a new clutch along with the short block. Any "sins" of the first owner are absolved and what happens now to my drive train is of my doing and full knowledge. That's peace of mind enough for me as I truly enjoy driving this car. It was an effort to even locate the car, so I'm making at least an equal effort to keep it.

Possibly it was bad battery causing those issues. Too bad the seller didn't at least check before sending you out in the car.

Obviously not knowing what was wrong or myself being too mechanically inclined, it would suck if all those problems were caused by a relatively easy fix of a bad battery. My brother thought maybe if it had been towed improperly the awd system could get screwed up. I'm still looking for one though, I can't resist the idea of awd + 6MT + lux sport sedan...hopefully someday...

I have 2010 Sh-Awd A-spec Canadian model and I am very happy. 75,000KM on it. Super fun to drive. It's not a BMW 335 but a very well balanced between premium/luxury and fun to drive.

Good luck!

2012 6mt with 75k (canadian) absolutely love it. everytime you take an on-ramp, the smirk that it gives you will never wear off. kept it mostly stock. only plans is a set of 19's next year. thankfully i haven't noticed any oil burning issue however i dont follow the maintenance minder and just do 3k oil changes. so in 3k i dont see the level on the dipstick drop. all i can say is for the price, this is the best bang for luxury, sport and tech.
just be patient and wait for one to show up in your area

You're right -- the taillight lens doesn't pop out every time you close the trunk like on my friend's new 335!
