2012 SH-AWD Transmission Behavior

First Acura so wanted to post to the forum to get opinions on whether it was just me or if there is something odd with my car.

I find the transmission in my car to be a bit on the harsh side with the shifts in traffic and really sluggish when taking off and wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I don't think there is anything wrong per se but it just feels really funny - kinda like it is either searching for the gear it wants to be in and / or it is trying to get to 6th gear as soon as it can. For example, If I slow from 50 to 20 and try to speed up again, there are times when it has not downshifted and is still in 6th gear. IMHO, no way it should be in 6th gear at 20mph. I realize I could use sport mode and take over some of that decision making but not always convenient. Really compromises the smoothness / quality of the ride at low speeds and stop and go conditions. Could it be a gas mileage thing?

Thanks in advance for your time.

how many miles do you have?

keep in mind they programmed the auto for max mpg and when you first get the car you're told to baby it for 500 miles. my advice is to reset the computer and drive it more aggressive for a while afterwards so it learns your driving habits. resetting is accomplished by disconnecting your negative battery terminal for a half hour or so

Appreciate the reply - it has about 15,000 miles on it and I don't tend to drive it aggressively.

At times I do feel like it is sluggish after slowing down as you said say from 50-20. Not always, but sometimes. When that happens I usually use the double down feature on the paddle shifters and usually puts me into 2nd gear. You can do that w/o going into sport mode, but as you said it's not always convenient.

Thanks for starting this thread - it is of particular interest to me. I was thinking of starting a thread to ask but thought maybe it was just me.

I purchased my 2012 AH-AWD Elite/Advance with 10,000km on it two months ago (it was driven by the owner of the dealership from new). I feel like mine shifts into second way too early off the start if I'm accelerating normally - it's OK if I give it some gas harder.

The shifts just feel 'loose' in lower gears and I experience the same feeling described above if slowing in traffic and then pull out into the fast lane - like there is a hesitation before it goes.

A comment above says you can 'reset' the computer so it can learn your driving style. How is this done? I'm thinking maybe I need it to learn the way I drive in comparison to the owner of the dealer - because it didn't feel like this when I bought it, but now that I have 3,000km and two months of driving, I'm feeling it. Hell, maybe I'm the problem and I was babying it and so it's turned soft on me LOL and the owner drove it harder!

Sorry - ignore my earlier question. I see it was answered above by saying to disconnect the battery for awhile (missed that when reading the thread on the iPad). Will this interfere with seat settings, radio presets, HDD library etc?

I have an 09, but I tend to drive more sedately when I'm in "D" and when I put it into "Sport" mode I drive it harder... the car feels far more aggressive in S mode... not sure if it is ONLY holding the gears longer, or what else the computer alters... but it seems much sportier...

what exactly does the car do differently / change when you go to S mode vs. Auto.

I know that it holds gears longer, it stays in a lower gear, and if you start using the paddles.. it will not override you and it requires you to manually change gears.. whereas in D mode.. if you select a gear with the paddles.. it will go back to auto mode if you stop using them for a few seconds....

does shift speed change or thottle mapping??

Well same thing happened with me. Though mine FWD, but coming from 4 cyl Accord, transmission felt terribly harsh at first and jerky. I was really disappointed. But I think as indicated by others, the car actually 'learns' your driving style. Mine is now 4k+ miles on it. And i really feel the difference.

For example: at first it used to shift continuously from 3rd to 4th back and forth again and again while city driving (~25-35 mph speed). And that was really annoying. Now I see, it doesn't do that it sticks to 3rd and only up shifts to 4th if I accelerate. I might be wrong but what ever it is, definitely I like it now.
