2012 SH-AWD TL - Piston and Rings Replacement
This is for 2012 SH-AWD TL with ~46K miles. After reading various oil consumption threads, I started oil consumption test with my dealer early last year. At the 2nd visit they advised it was consuming 1/4 of a quart of oil after ~1K miles, so not bad, so I didn't even bother returning for the 3rd visit. However, I have the knocking sound just below 3K rpm and loss of power and have had it for some time. So after they could not identify any other cause, the dealer advised another oil consumption test, but I never went back to get it checked.
Now out of the blue my dealer called me and said that he worked with Acura and got piston and rings replacement authorized at no charge. It would of course require disassembling and reassembling the engine. So I am now in double mind about getting this done or not. Here are the pros and cons I see:
+ Get the replacement done while being covered by Acura. If it happens it future, may not be covered.
+ May help with the knocking sound I get and reduced power...not sure about this one though.
- Engine rebuild may be risky. Why do it if do not have the oil consumption issue currently?
- Will (majorly?) impact resale value once it shows on carfax.
What do you recommend?
Thanks.

The inconvenient truth
Dude there are no negatives. Your car has a problem and they will fix it for free. How often does that happen on a 8 year old car.
Furthermore you didn't even take the test to qualify for the repair. So consider yourself one of the luckiest mofos out there and run over there to get it done before they change their mind.
Resale value will go up!!! Anyone looking to buy these cars and has done literally any research will know to look out for oil consumption and the problem you described. Having it fixed by Acura means they can be confident that your car will not have that problem.

I did the repairs on my TL.
- They fixed it all for free from Acura.
- My engine was fixed at an Acura Dealership that I went to that had Honda/Acura Techs.
- This is a great perk to have done and the oil consumption definitely goes down.
- When it was done I had an itemized list with a description of the work done to the motor.

Dealer is asking/recommending to do the Timing Belt package (timing belt, tensioner, water pump, drive belt and spark plugs) now for $1080, said it will be $2750 later. That sounds a lot?
I am especially hesitant because I only have ~46K miles over 8 yrs in SoCal. Does a time-interval apply if I am low mileage? Heck, I haven't had the '4' minder show up on my Odyssey yet that has ~90K miles over 11 years.
Also said the oil pump is leaking and they recommend fixing that as well for $500 now if I do the timing belt at same time, and will be $1800 later.
This just sounds inflated, so curious what you guys think?

Your answer should be a simple no. That's outrageous to do at 46k miles. Money grab that's all it is.

Crazy prices... I don't even believe they would do the fix for you if the oil pump were leaking.

I think all Acura service departments prices are jacked up. It's not just because of the "warranty" service. But, the oil pump leak should be repaired during this service. I can't be certain that it needs done, and it seems like there are a lot of leaking oil pumps where oil never reaches the ground, but better to do it now then later. As for the timing belt. I don't think I would do it until 100K miles or more. You might not even have the car when it gets to that mileage - so why pay for it now. Yes, it will cost more later, if the Acura dealer does it, but, if I recall, the owners manual talks about mileage not years in service. You could have them do the belt, but not the rest of the parts - that's only a small price. The expensive part is the entire kit and labor. They have to take the belt off for the service, and the serpentine belt - have both replaced.
6000 miles after they did the repair, I'm told I have a leak - main seal - $2K to repair. Think they could have told me that when they already had most of the engine out? Needless to say, I won't be repairing it unless is starts to gush oil.
