2012 Acura TL key fob

Hello,

The driver 1 key fob works normally but its exterior has some dings and I would like to replace it. All I need is the exterior shell replaced as the key functions fine but the dealer is saying that can't be done and need to buy a new key.

A new key according to the dealer is around $280 with key being cut and fob programmed for my car. I feel I am being shafted on two levels here, I see no reason why just the shell can be replaced and in case I wanna go for a new key $280 seems extremely high.

What do you guys think?

If it is just the shell you are concerned about why not consider a key fob case? Like this:

This is a great idea to protect the new key. I would still like to fix the key though.

It is possible that Acura doesn't sell the exterior key shell alone, but only the complete key fob with all the insides. That's why the dealership said it couldn't be done.

my driver 1 key fob has taken quite a beating from the previous owner but also due to poor fob design. acura should really be using better material for the chrome/silver areas.

im too am not willing to shell out the money to buy a new key fob and one of these days i'll sand it down and repaint the whole key black.

I thought I remember someone here wrapping theirs in CF vinyl.

Its just a key you keep in your pocket - I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You can absolutely purchase the JUST THE shell from a local Acura dealership OR from these two sites that have been mentioned a lot in these forums:
http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/jsp/home.jsp
or
http://www.oemacuraparts.com/

Both these sites beat dealership prices by a lot.

I also need/want a new keyfob without wanting or needing the actual key or guts. Mention acurazine.com to these folks and you can get more off the total purchase. Good luck.

The remote unit is a part of the SMART UNIT. Looks like most parts of the SMART UNIT are for sale a la cart. The lower shell sells for $20 and the upper shell sells for $35.....guts and key not included. Check out this link.

There is also the small cap on the key side of the remote (illustration no. 19).

you can just swap the shells.

ive popped mine open many times and i dont see why you can swap it over.

your key fob can be swapped, but i am not sure if the top part where the actual key can be swapped.. i think there is a transponder inside.

I bout one of these. It's a little inconvenient to get the key out to leave the fob with a parking attendent but since it's not done all that often - oh well.

However, the screw snapped off so I took the one I gave my wife. Same problem - the screw snapped off.

There really needs to be a better solution !!!!

I tried to disassemble they key before I order the replacement shell but doesnt seem like an easy task. I'll try to mess with it more when I have some time, but Acura did do a lousy paint/design job on those keys. I know its just a key, but true quality is in the details especially that its not going to cost a lot to make better keys.

Agreed. The silver paint is chipped to hell on the wifes key. The RDX key is solid rough black plastic, and holds up to the wear and tear much better. Perhaps an actual aluminum case would have been the best choice.

I'm new to this forum. I recently purchased 2012 tl and the dealer only provided 1 fob. I want to get an extra one for emergency and dealer is asking 340. Wanted to ask what the options are. Can I buy the fob online and program it myself? If so, is it easy to do that..and if someone can share the procedure or is it best to just buy it from dealer? They said just programming costs 130. That's too much I think.

You can repaint it.

https://acurazine.com/forums/problem...ed-key-908776/

I am going to clear coat it and or put a cover on it after I repaint it again later this year.

I just purchased a 2012 TL, only got 1 key. If i get the key off of ebay, in additional to get it cut at the shop, i understand it needs to be programmed. Is there guides to program the key chip? This is not programming the remote/fob. thanks.

That should be a given, however I'd call the dealership and verify that they will program a blank key purchased from ebay and don't require that you purchase the key from an authorized acura dealer...seems like it would be something they'd make a stink about

Here's a listing for shell cover with key blade. Will come from Hong Kong - but seeing that it's only $22, may be a viable option. If anyone does order, please post your results.

Can it be programmed via DIY or does it have it be done at the dealer?

Really??

First, look at the listing; it's for a shell only. There's nothing to program.

Second, if there were electronics, your question was answered a couple of posts up. You actually had to scroll past the answer to make your post.

First off, the slick attitude is really unnecessary. I'm just trying to get some info. If you don't have the answers, don't reply. If you were offended by my asking, that's something you need to deal with.

In the link that was posted, there's an uncut key and that's what I was referring to for programming.

And lastly, fuck you!

I'd apologize on behalf of Sockpuppet, but given he's from Canada, he's got it rough enough already!lol I just bought my 2014 TL SH-AWD Tech, and after looking at the link for the key shell, it looks like you take out the programmed guts of your old key, and snap the new case around it. I would give a quick call to an Acura service tech just to be sure, but that's how I see it.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and buy into this fiction that you used the word "program" to describe the cutting of a key. I'll give you that, notwithstanding you refer to the key in the ad as "uncut", not "unprogrammed".

So, going on that assumption, I'll suggest that if you wish to be understood, use the words you mean.

Finally, I don't know what a "slick" attitude is, and I've certainly not been accused of having one before. Since I don't recognize it, I can't really deny it. But in terms of attitudes that are "unnecessary", please refer to the last line of your reply. If you have a problem with me, you're welcome to PM.

IMHO, if the internals of the keys are fine (which they are), just get a new exterior part and silicone case. I have re-painted mine but it will only last a bit before you go for the final solution.
